I’ve been reading C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters this month.
It’s interesting because Screwtape's goal isn't dramatic destruction, it's tiny onslaughts of distraction, one after another, designed to keep our thoughts off of God and on all of the cares of today….
….responding to a client email, picking up milk from the grocery, avoiding a hard conversation with a parent, nursing a petty wound inflicted by someone on the internet that actually has nothing to do with you.
Death from a thousand cuts.
It's not just that the pace of our modern life, our phones, our devices are distracting us.
It's also that something ancient and deliberate is doing the distracting.
If we want our life back, it’s going to require the intentionality of reducing distraction as much as possible, relying on the help of the Holy Spirit, and reorienting back to Truth.
Oh and probably just outright deleting social media.
It’s not enough to just stop mindlessly scrolling.
There has to be a replacement of that time with things that will actually nourish your entire being.
I’m sharing a list of 20 or so things I’m doing instead of participating in the rat race. I go more in depth on my Substack that you can check out here: open.substack.com/pub/returningtobeauty/p/im-optin…
I'm four pages in and already get the sense this may very well become a favorite.
I recently discovered @AndrewKlavan's book "The Truth and Beauty" and it was an instant purchase. The premise of this book is what I'm aiming to share with my own channel and makes me feel like I'm not the only person who approaches literature and the arts through the only lens by which anything created by human beings can make sense.
Now that the winter’s gone, the earth hath lost Her snow-white robes; and now no more the frost Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream Upon the silver lake or crystal stream; But the warm sun thaws the benumbed earth, And makes it tender; gives a sacred birth To the dead swallow; wakes in hollow tree The drowsy cuckoo and the humble bee.

I can’t think of a better way to kick off America’s birthday weekend than with this beautiful film.
So inspiring and humbling.
We take so much for granted.
I’m so grateful for the men and women who stood up to an overreaching monarchy and sacrificed everything for the freedoms we get to enjoy today.
May we continue to fight for and defend this land of liberty.
Let freedom ring!

Many times living intentionally requires saying no to things that on the surface look like no-brainer opportunities.
I'm sharing the reality of what slowing down and living with intention looks like in this season.
Let me know what you think in the comments of the video!

Happy first official day of Spring!
"Spring" by Thomas Carew
Now that the winter’s gone, the earth hath lost
Her snow-white robes; and now no more the frost
Candies the grass, or casts an icy cream
Upon the silver lake or crystal stream;
But the warm sun thaws the benumbed earth,
And makes it tender; gives a sacred birth
To the dead swallow; wakes in hollow tree
The drowsy cuckoo and the humble bee.

Creativity isn't merely self-expression, it's image-bearing.
You were made in the image of a Creator.
When you stop making things, you don't just become bored.
You suppress something God put in you to ultimately express the beauty of who He is.
