This special event marks two major milestones:
• The return of Reelblack Presents, the influential Philly screening series founded by filmmaker/curator Michael J. Dennis
• The inaugural release of Reelblack Renaissance, a boutique Blu-ray label dedicated to restoring and reissuing lost classics of Black independent cinema
Directed by Sam Firstenberg (American Ninja 1 & 2) and starring Steve James (I’m Gonna Git You Sucka) and Margaret Avery (The Color Purple), Riverbend is a long-lost 1989 independent action drama about three Black Vietnam veterans who help a small Southern town organize against systemic injustice.
Suppressed after its original release, the film has spent decades in obscurity. This 6K restoration—scanned from original 35mm elements under Firstenberg’s supervision—marks its first availability in over 35 years.
Director Sam Firstenberg will be in attendance, along with surviving cast members Julius Tennon and Vanessa Tate for a post-film Q&A moderated by The Micheaux Mission.
