This Hadith, found in Sahih Muslim 2998a, means that a believer should be intelligent, cautious, and learn from past mistakes. It teaches that a person should not allow themselves to be fooled, harmed, or fall into the same trap twice.
Being sincere, loving, and assuming well of people is all part of good character. Being naive and allowing yourself to be taken advantage of isn't.
