Jefferson and Clinton were reelected last election. Jefferson decided to continue the tradition set by the late George Washington of only serving two terms. He endorsed Vice President Clinton for president this year. Clinton was nominated by the Democratic-Republicans with James Madison, the Secretary of State, as his running mate.
The Federalists likely would have renominated Alexander Hamilton this year, but Hamilton was assassinated in a duel between him and Aaron Burr, a former senator from New York, earlier this year. The Federalists once again nominated Charles Cotesworth Pinckney for President, with Rufus King as his running mate.

Secretary Jefferson and former Governor Clinton were elected president and vice president by a landslide in 1796. The only state that Vice President Adams won that year was his home state of Massachusetts. Jefferson and Clinton were renominated for the Democratic-Republican Party.
John Adams took a retirement from politics. The Federalists nominated Alexander Hamilton, the former Treasury Secretary, to be their contender. Hamilton chose Thomas Pinckney, a representative from South Carolina, to be his running mate.

President Washington and Vice President Adams were elected to second terms in 1792. By 1796, Washington announced he wouldn't be running a third time to most peoples' dismay. He endorsed his Vice President Adams for the presidency that year, with his Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton as the running mate, but Hamilton solemnly refused to run alongside Adams. Adams ran as a Federalist this election, instead of an independent. He chose John Jay, the Federalists' nominee in 1792, and then Incumbent Governor of New York to be his running mate.
The Democratic Republicans nominated the Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, for president. He chose George Clinton, the Democratic-Republicans' nominee in 1792, and former Governor of New York to be his running mate.
