Planet decolonized

With 8+ yrs of experience spanning international development, civil litigation, and academia, here, I, Dr. Nairita Roy Chaudhuri, explore creative freedom & critical ideas to address the planetary crisis shaped by colonial capitalism, climate & ecological breakdown. I do so via two simultaneous modes of thinking: a social mode demanding radical equality among humans towards racial & intersectional justice; and an ecological mode seeking equality between humans and other forms of life for socio-ecological justice. The point is to reimagine just planetary futures beyond mansplained, whitewashed, and monodisciplinary narratives. I hold a joint Ph.D. in Law & Development (Tilburg University, Netherlands & University of Oslo, Norway), where I explored how law can intersectionally empower subaltern & climate-affected communities to adapt to water insecurities, interviewing 300+ participants across rural India (West Bengal, Odisha).

Planet decolonized

Hi folks, do check out the critiques of ‘development’ in another channel I’m collaborating on, based on our 'Sufficiency and Wellbeing' magazine, where I discuss with a PhD scholar, Maria Jose Recalde-Vela, and a degrowth activist, Gisela Ruiseco, what decolonization and relationality mean in the South American context, and how these ideas connect to global capitalism and Western imperialism—issues that are highly relevant to postcolonial countries.

Planet decolonized

There is an urgency to understand how the global far-right parties funded by transnational infrastructures of finance capitalism and anchored in religious fundamentalism/nationalism are more consolidated than ever, blurring those age-old nation-state & insular boundaries; alongside violently breaching our rights to basic conditions of well-being more than ever. I somewhat tried to look into this problem and wrote about it here. Check it out: www.sufficiencywellbeing.com/p/the-urgency-of-adiv…

Latest on this channel: Degrowth is an anti-capitalist movement/approach that calls for a planned reduction in economic production and consumption so that cumulative human activities remain within planetary boundaries while ensuring socio-ecological justice. But what might degrowth look like for subsistence Indigenous (Adivasi) and Dalit communities in postcolonial India, who are currently resisting internal colonization, including displacement due to mining (for Bauxite) activities in Odisha in eastern India, and ongoing state and police violence that threatens their ancestral forest lands and livelihoods?

In this video, I explore alternative Adivasi economics that is non-violent, and is grounded in a relational understanding of land—one that integrates water, forests, and earth (Jal, Jungle aur Zameen) as interconnected and inseparable from community life. The degrowth movement must ally with indigenous economics across the globe for a more situated understanding of 'LAND'.

Planet decolonized

New video up.

At a time of climate and fuel crises, and US-Israel military and economic aggression against Iran and Cuba, I discuss what we can learn from Cuba and Sri Lanka based on political ecologist, Dr. Julia Wright's research in Cuba, and other research papers!

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced a severe shortage of fossil fuels and agrochemicals. This video outlines six key strategies it used to survive the crisis and still transition to organic farming.

In contrast, Sri Lanka’s 2021 fertilizer import ban shows how a rushed ban on agricultural imports can backfire, triggering major farmers’ protests.

If we’re serious about solving the climate-linked fuel crisis, how our agricultural sector transitions matters.
