The Passing of Time: Where Memories Meet the Future"

Standing behind the rusted barbed wire at the Ranaghat Car Shed, two generations of the railway's lifeline share a silent, emotional moment. On one side, the battle-worn, weathered faces of the old EMU and MEMU units tell a story of endless journeys, carrying millions of dreams, daily struggles, and human emotions through rain, heat, and winters over the decades. Their fading yellow paint and weary horns speak of a glorious era of selfless service.

And right beside these veterans, a subtle glimpse of the pristine new MEMU rake appears—sleek, modern, and ready to take over the tracks. It is a beautiful yet poignant reminder of transition. The old warriors are quietly stepping back into the shadows, passing the torch to the future.

They may be retired, but the tracks will forever echo with the rhythm of their wheels

The Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi crafted an absolute beast of Indian Railways with the WDG-4 diesel-electric locomotive, proudly bearing the road number 12980. Operating under the Andal Diesel Loco Shed of the Eastern Railway zone, this high-horsepower machine stands out visually with its signature UDL green livery, bright cream cab, matching side bands, and sharp orange accents. The alphanumeric code reveals its true identity as a broad-gauge, diesel-powered freight master packing a massive 4,500-horsepower punch. At its heart lies a turbocharged 16-cylinder EMD 710G3B engine, paired with modern IGBT-based traction control systems and computer-controlled braking to ensure maximum track efficiency. Its heavy Co-Co axle design distributes weight perfectly across six axles for immense gripping power. While built to haul heavy goods like coal and steel, this versatile locomotive frequently thrills rail enthusiasts by crossing over into passenger operations, effortlessly pulling prominent mail and express trains across the country.

An absolute treat for the lenses today in the Gede – Ranaghat section! Spotted the relatively new, Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW) built WAP-7 39535 from the Sealdah (SDAD) Loco Shed.

Instead of its usual heavy passenger duties like the Rajdhani, this 6,350 HP pure-AC beast was captured doing some serious heavy lifting—hauling the OMS (Oscillation Monitoring System) Inspection Car.

For the uninitiated, OMS cars are crucial for track safety. They measure track ride quality, lateral/vertical accelerations, and overall track health at high speeds. Seeing a pristine, late-2025 commissioned WAP-7 leading this short, high-priority inspection rake through the green stretches of Nadia district was a sight to behold!

Loco: SDAD WAP-7 39535 (HOG & Kavach Compliant)

Location: Gede – Ranaghat Section, Eastern Railway (ER)

Assignment: Track Inspection / OMS Special Run

The rich history, transition, and absolute grit of Indian Railways' most celebrated locomotive classes are beautifully captured in this striking assembly. On the left stands the WDM-3D, representing the ultimate evolution of the classic, rugged ALCO diesel platform that powered India for decades. Packing 3,300 HP from a turbocharged 16-cylinder engine, this mixed-traffic veteran is famous for its signature deep chugging sound and exceptional reliability across un-electrified territories. Featured prominently in the center is the legendary WAG-5, an electric powerhouse introduced in 1980 by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works that became the absolute backbone of India’s freight network during the early eras of electrification. Generating 3,850 HP, this broad-gauge AC traction workhorse is built to conquer heavy gradients and remains operational today in its distinctive classic liveries. Complementing this legendary lineup is the modern WDP-4D passenger king, which represents the pinnacle of GM-EMD technology built indigenously by Banaras Locomotive Works. This massive 4,500 HP dual-cab locomotive can reach speeds of 135 km/h, making it the premier choice for hauling India's high-speed premium trains like the Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. Together, from the classic diesel rumble of the ALCO to the high-tech 3-phase power of the EMD and the vintage hum of AC electric lines, these machines represent the literal steel veins of the nation.
