ZA/UM sent along a lovely letter and this AMAZING PORTRAIT OF ME BY SENIOR ARTIST DARIA KALASHNIKOVA IN THE ZERO PARADES STYLE AAAAH as thanks for showing off the game and everything. Excuse me while I completely lose my mind.
People have been commenting that our man Lenval Brown is in this game. He's also in ZP, if you hadn't heard. It looks like the DE voice cast is getting a ton of work these days.
The review embargo on ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies lifts today. I wanted to put out a review video right away but my voice is still shot and I can't get a good take to save my life, so expect that in a day or two instead, hopefully before the game releases for real on the 21st.
As a disclaimer, ZA/UM sent me a review copy. This was a no strings attached kind of deal (the only kind I would ever take) and I'm not obligated to say anything nice or even anything at all.
If you're curious about my verdict: game good. The political philosophy behind it will be familiar to Disco fans, and justifiable fears that the messaging would be watered down without Kurvitz at the helm have not come true so far as I've seen. Communism won in ZP's world, and though it has turned out to be far from perfect, its enemies have only exploitation and extermination to offer those who fall under their shadow. Like DE, it tries to take a clear eyed look at what drives these systems and the people who believe in them, and though it leans hard left, it's not unsympathetic to the individual.
If you never played Disco Elysium, but you like wordy RPGs, weird ladies who are 40 years old, or spy stories, you'll probably find a lot to love here.
If you are a Disco fan, you'll probably most immediately note that the game is not as packed with goofs and gags. It is still very funny, but jokes come more infrequently, and many of the characters, with a few exceptions like Dr. Gonza, are played straight. The prose isn't as dense, something I generally consider a good thing, but it leaves less room to hide jokes.
I think this was likely a conscious decision as more is going on in ZERO PARADES's plot. DE's central mystery is quite straightforward. The meat of the game comes from doing the tremendous amount of footwork required to solve a murder, 90% of which is getting Harry no closer to closing the case. Humor then serves as a way to keep the player interested in all this wandering around and bothering people. ZP doesn't need as much padding, and in fact doesn't have room for it, as more moving pieces are in play and a lot more seems to be going on, plotwise.
This isn't a good or bad thing, but if you came from DE expecting the same level of nonstop humor, you'll find that a good deal of it has been replaced with intrigue, which may or may not be what you're looking for. Ultimately they're two different kinds of stories which require different approaches.
As for the art, voices, and systems, I have only good things to say. Several VAs are immediately recognizable from DE and I started whooping and hollering when I heard Jonathon West (Idiot Doom Spiral) while internalizing a thought about what it means to have *it*.
There's a lot more to say, so pop by when the video drops if you'd like to hear more. In the meantime I've streamed the first few hours of the game which you can check out in the Live tab.
Check out this Cataclysm: The Last Generation fanart! The little details are amazing, and if you've played the game, this should be a pretty familiar situation.
I guested on a podcast with @SumitoMedia ! We talk about the industry, horror, the creative process, video games, and a bunch of other stuff. Go check it out!
Hello to everyone popping in after seeing the Pyrocynical video! I wasn't sure if it would ever come out, but now I see why it was in production for so long.
Lots of news! First up is that there are some new items in the store. We've got a beautful t-shirt design by m0rb1dspade, who's done a lot of the thumbnail stuff for the channel, and they've also made two stickers featuring Elster and Nas'hrah, as well as yours truly. I've bundled these into pack featuring two of endrealm's designs and a wiggly worm I drew by my own self.
Second, I am please to announce that the script for What Happens in Final Fantasy VIII is complete! It clocks in at a trim 62,000 words, which is about 10% longer than Signalis's script, lord help me. The gameplay footage is all recorded, so now it's simply a matter of recording narration and trying to edit it together. They say I'm going to be let out to see the sun when it's finished.

Eeeyikes! This Termina festival is dark and scary. I hope I don't become "fear and hunger"
