Posdnuos of De La Sould sat down with me at Rockefeller Center for a full hour — the new album, the catalog fight, losing Dave, and what it actually took to keep De La Soul going.
There's a moment in this conversation where Pos describes how he convinced Mase they had to press on. He called it a "Beat Street moment." Then Dave's sister Cindy pulled them aside at the private memorial and said: "If y'all stop, then Dave stops." That's the line that became a lyric on the album.
We also get into the opening skit — the roll call of every artist on the record, and what happens when they call Dave's name. Pos conceived that from jump. He knew exactly what he was doing.
