Tennessee and Idaho are leading the way! Both states have expanded Extended Foster Care eligibility to age 23, giving young people two more years of housing, guidance and life-skills support as they transition to adulthood.
This change reflects a growing national commitment to ensure young people leaving foster care have the stability and relationships they need to thrive in early adulthood. Research shows every extra year in care improves education, employment and housing stability.
When we invest in young people, we invest in stronger communities and brighter futures.

Every young person deserves a chance to thrive, no matter where they start. Through our LifeSet program, we walked alongside one incredible young woman as she turned pain into purpose. With support, she found stability, graduated college and is now preparing to become a lawyer. Her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we invest in youth.

Thank you to Lasheunda Carr, a LifeSet leader from Lawrence Hall in Chicago, who recently testified at a House Ways and Means Subcommittee hearing on innovation, technology and needed improvements in Chafee funding for young people leaving foster care.
Carr joined other experts to discuss her work with the LifeSet program model and its embedded GuideTree workforce development support and technology tool. While tech is important, Carr and others stressed the importance of relationships. “I emphasize one thing above all: consistency,” she said. “Showing up. Every week. Every time.”

For many students, college is about books and classes. For Zephaniah, it meant finally having a safe place to live.
After leaving an abusive household, Zephaniah experienced homelessness and uncertainty. With the help of LifeSet, he finished high school, secured on-campus housing and started college. His story reminds us that with the right support, young people can overcome homelessness and pursue their dreams.
You can read Zephaniah's full story on our blog.

From morning coffee chats to late-day apartment visits, Independent Living Program Specialist Noah Gerber demonstrates what it means to meet young adults where they are.
In Portland, Oregon, he begins his day with Elijah, a high school senior balancing football and college ambitions, and ends the day helping Brayden register for community college and plan his budget. Along the way, he joins his ILP team to handle tough cases and ensure no youth faces challenges alone.
Follow along to see how our specialists connect with young people where they are and support them in reaching their goals.

“I get to be the adult I needed when I was her age.”
When Sydney moved to Memphis, she wasn’t just looking for a new place to live, she was looking for connection. She found it through our mentoring program, where she met Kyler.
Now, their weekly hangouts — filled with laughter, creativity and even crochet projects — have become the best part of Sydney’s week.
Her journey is proof that when you invest in a young person, you also grow, heal and find your place in the community.
