🚫 The Ultimate Guide to Double White Lines: Overtaking & Parking Rules ⚪️⚪️
Do you know exactly what you can and cannot do when you see double white lines on the road? Many drivers get caught out by these markings, but the Highway Code is very clear on both overtaking and parking.

Here is everything you need to know to stay safe and legal under Rules 129 and 240!

1️⃣ Moving: When Can You Cross a Solid Line? (Rule 129)
When the line nearest to you is solid, you MUST NOT cross or straddle it. However, there are a few very specific, legal exceptions.

You may only cross or straddle the solid line if it is safe, the road is clear, and you are:

Turning off the road: To enter a side road, a driveway, or any adjoining premises.

Passing a stationary vehicle: To get around a vehicle that is completely stopped (not just waiting in traffic).

Overtaking extremely slow-moving road users: You can cross to pass a pedal cycle, a horse, or a road maintenance vehicle—but only if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

2️⃣ Parking: Can You Park Next to Double White Lines? (Rule 240)
The short answer is no. You MUST NOT stop or park on any road marked with double white lines.

The Broken Line Myth: This rule applies even if the broken line is on your side of the road. If double white lines are present, parking on the carriageway is illegal because it forces oncoming traffic to dangerously cross a solid line to get past you.

⚖️ The Only Exceptions to Rule 240:
You may only pause briefly on the carriageway if you are:

Picking up or setting down passengers

Loading or unloading goods

Take a close look at the picture ahead. You're on a single carriageway country road, there are no immediate speed limit signs in view, and there’s a junction joining from the left.

If this is a standard single carriageway with no signs, the National Speed Limit applies. But here is the real test:

1️⃣ What is the absolute maximum speed limit for a car here?
2️⃣ Does that limit change if you are driving a van or towing a trailer? 🚚
3️⃣ Just because a road has a specific limit, does it mean it's safe to drive at that speed?

🚗 Country Junctions Demand Your Full Attention 🌿

Looking at this junction... do you know the speed limit of the road you're about to join? 🤔

Many drivers assume they know, but on rural roads it's easy to get caught out. The speed limit isn't always obvious, and a road that looks quiet can still have vehicles approaching at speed.

Before joining the main road:
✅ Stop where you have the best view.
✅ Look carefully in both directions.
✅ Be prepared for hidden hazards such as bends, hedges, cyclists, horse riders, walkers, and agricultural vehicles.
✅ Only pull out when you're certain it's safe.

🟡 Do you know why some UK road signs have a yellow background? 🤔

Most speed limit signs in the UK have a white background, so when you spot one with a yellow backing board, it's there for a reason.

The yellow background isn't a different speed limit or a special type of restriction. Instead, it's used to make the sign stand out where it might otherwise be easy to miss.

You'll often see yellow-backed signs:
🚗 On roads where drivers need extra warning of a speed limit change.
🌳 Where trees, hedges or the surroundings make a sign less noticeable.
⚠️ At locations with a history of drivers missing the sign or where extra visibility improves safety.

The speed limit shown on the sign is exactly the same—the yellow backing simply helps draw your attention to it.

We’ve all seen it, and let’s be honest, most of us have a strong opinion on it. You’re driving down a clear motorway, and there it is… a lone car cruising comfortably in lane 2.

Middle lane hogging is one of the UK’s biggest driving pet peeves, but why do people do it? Is it laziness, a lack of confidence changing lanes, or just not realizing it’s actually against the Highway Code?

Rule 264 clearly states: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear." Ignoring this can result in a £100 fine and 3 penalty points for careless driving! 🚨
