Today I was sitting in my garden, and some elderly people were discussing politics outside. I realized that their conversations were heavily influenced by social media. The things they were saying weren't really their thoughts or opinions, but rather the opinions and thoughts of social media influencers. It's like a trap - whatever we see and hear on social media becomes our opinion, and we don't think for ourselves. Social media forces us to think in a certain way, and our thoughts aren't really our own. We're just adopting others' opinions as our own
I had a profound realization that shook me to my core - my admiration for Modi ji was not rooted in my own thoughts or convictions, but was instead a mere reflection of the curated content on my Instagram feed. I used to enthusiastically echo the sentiments of my online community, praising his initiatives and policies without ever taking the time to form my own informed opinions My thoughts were not my own; they were a regurgitation of the talking points and narratives that flooded my social media timeline
It dawned on me that I'm not alone in this trap. We're all susceptible to the influence of social media, where influencers and opinion makers shape our views and dictate our perspectives. We find ourselves conforming to the majority, praising or criticizing someone or something without ever stopping to consider the nuances of the issue. We're more like puppets on strings, with our thoughts and opinions being manipulated by the invisible forces of the digital world.
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that this phenomenon is a ticking time bomb. We're losing our capacity for critical thinking, our ability to form our own opinions, and our autonomy. We're becoming mere echoes of others' voices, rather than being the authors of our own stories. The internet and social media, which were once hailed as revolutionary tools for democratization and self-expression, have become instruments of control, shaping our thoughts and opinions in ways we're not even aware of.
It's a scary thought, but it's a harsh reality. We're trapped in a cycle of conformity, where dissenting voices are silenced, and critical thinking is discouraged. We're not encouraged to question the narrative or challenge the status quo. Instead, we're fed a constant stream of information that's designed to provoke an emotional response, rather than spark meaningful discussions.
I'm not sure what the solution is, but I know we need to wake up and take control of our own minds. We need to start thinking for ourselves, questioning the information we're fed, and forming our own opinions based on facts and experiences. Only then can we break free from the shackles of social media and reclaim our autonomy as individuals."
