Ethiopia Develops Indigenous Military Technology to Strengthen National Defense Capabilities

Ethiopia is taking concrete steps towards strengthening its defense capabilities through the development of indigenous military technology, according to senior officials following a recent national industrial exhibition.

Speaking after a high-level visit by military leaders to a defense industry exhibition organized under the theme “Ethiopia Produces,”/ "ኢትዮጵያ ታምርት" Yimer Mekonnen stressed that the country is increasingly capable of producing key military technologies domestically. These developments, he noted, are increasing the efficiency and operational readiness of the Ethiopian armed forces.

The exhibition featured a variety of locally developed innovations designed to support military missions, reflecting the country’s broader efforts to reduce its dependence on foreign products. Gen. Yimer stressed that in today’s challenging security environment, relying solely on foreign suppliers is no longer sustainable.

He stressed that improving defense capabilities is essential not only for protecting national interests but also for ensuring reliable and uninterrupted supply of equipment to the military. Indigenous defense industries, he explained, play a key role in achieving this goal.

Looking ahead, the General called for expanded investment in research institutions and innovation systems to accelerate the development of advanced technologies. Strengthening local expertise and promoting innovation, he said, should be a national priority.

Military leaders attending the exhibition expressed optimism, noting that Ethiopia’s natural resources and human capital provide a solid foundation for building a strong and self-reliant defense industry.

Patriotism Beyond Words: Abiy Ahmed Calls for Selfless Sacrifice in Service of Ethiopia

In a message marking the 85th Patriotic Day, Abiy Ahmed offered a clarifying reflection on the meaning of patriotism—describing it not as a rhetoric, but as a sincere commitment to selfless sacrifice for the nation.

He described true patriotism as an act devoid of personal gain, but rather rooted in unwavering devotion to the country and people. Recalling the historical resistance to fascist invasion, he emphasized that Ethiopian patriots fought not for personal gain, but to protect the freedom and dignity of the nation.

According to the Prime Minister, the struggle for patriotism has always involved three things: overcoming personal interests, resisting internal betrayal, and confronting external threats. These challenges, he noted, remain relevant today—though their forms may have changed.

Abiy stressed that true national service requires individuals to set aside personal ambitions, status, and material gain in favor of shared development. He warned that failure to do so risks undermining national unity and undermining long-term stability.

Expanding on this message, the speech outlines a broader vision: a modern Ethiopia built on collective responsibility, moral leadership, and citizen commitment. Across sectors, citizens are called to emulate patriotism through action—contributing to development, preserving unity, and strengthening institutions.

In this vision, patriotism is not a moment in history, but a continuing role that shapes Ethiopia’s future.

Ethiopia Expands Fuel Subsidies to Protect Citizens from Global Price Shocks

The Ethiopian government has expanded its economic intervention measures to protect citizens from rising fuel costs, as global energy prices continue to fluctuate. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide announced that the state is maintaining a large subsidy to prevent the direct impact of price increases on households and businesses.

According to the minister, the government is allocating about 20 billion birr each month to stabilize fuel prices. In total, fuel subsidies have now exceeded 300 billion birr—a sign of the extent of Ethiopia’s efforts to cushion its economy from external shocks.

Although fuel supply levels have gradually returned to normal following initial disruptions linked to Middle East tensions, authorities acknowledge that global volatility continues to pose risks. As such, the subsidy program remains a key policy tool aimed at controlling inflation and maintaining economic activity.

Officials say the approach is closely aligned with Ethiopia’s broader economic goals, including maintaining growth targets and supporting key sectors such as transport, agriculture and industry. At the same time, the government has urged citizens to use fuel responsibly and avoid waste.

To strengthen management, a dedicated national task force has been deployed to monitor fuel supplies and prices around the clock.

The message from policymakers is clear: carefully managing scarce resources will be key to maintaining economic stability during a period of global uncertainty.

Abiy Ahmed Calls for National Focus and Commitment to Elevate Ethiopia’s Global Position

At a national consultation forum held under the theme “Social Development for Nation Building,” Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed delivered a message centered on accountability, discipline, and long-term vision.

In his speech, the Prime Minister urged citizens to move beyond what he described as “distractions” that are slowing down national development. He stressed that Ethiopia must rise above internal divisions and short-term thinking if it is to take its rightful place on the global stage.

Underlining the country’s position as one of the most populous nations in Africa, Abiy noted that Ethiopia has great untapped potential. However, he stressed that realizing this potential requires sustained efforts, collective responsibility, and a willingness to prioritize national interests over individual or group agendas.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that while progress has been made in some areas, much important work remains to be done. He called on citizens to recognize the importance of hard work and long-term commitment, especially for the benefit of future generations.

In a keynote address, Abiy urged Ethiopians to embrace personal commitment and responsibility, warning against complacency. He said that meaningful change depends on collective national efforts—ones that aim to build stability, strengthen institutions, and expand opportunities.

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that with unity and determination, Ethiopia can achieve a stronger and more influential position in Africa and beyond.

Ethiopia and Sweden Explore Strategic Partnership in Peaceful Nuclear Energy Development

Officials from Ethiopia and Sweden have held high-level discussions on potential cooperation in the development of peaceful nuclear energy, expressing a growing interest in expanding cooperation in advanced energy technologies.

The talks brought together Sandokan Debebe, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, and Magnus Lennartsson, Ambassador of Sweden to Ethiopia. During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities to work together in strengthening Ethiopia’s long-term energy strategy and building institutional capacity in nuclear science and technology.

Commissioner Sandokan Debebe emphasized Ethiopia’s vision of diversifying its energy sources to ensure the country’s long-term energy security. With a rapidly growing population, expanding urban centers, and accelerating industrial development, Ethiopia is preparing to meet its future energy needs through a combination of renewable and advanced energy solutions, including the potential introduction of peaceful nuclear technology.

Ambassador Magnus Lennartsson highlighted Sweden’s extensive experience in nuclear energy policy, technology development, and public participation. Sweden has long-standing expertise in nuclear plant operations, safety management, fuel management, and safe disposal of radioactive waste.

In addition to technology cooperation, both sides also discussed academic cooperation aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s human capital in the nuclear sector. These initiatives could include scholarship opportunities, professional training programs, and institutional partnerships designed to support Ethiopian scientists and engineers.

The discussions reflect Ethiopia’s broader strategy to explore innovative energy solutions while building international partnerships that support sustainable development and technological advancement.
