2026 BECE Computing Predicted Topics

Computer Hardware & Operating System (OS)

Computer hardware is all the physical parts of a computer that you can see and touch. Input devices are used to send data into the computer, such as a keyboard, mouse, or scanner. Output devices are used to show the results of the computer’s work, like a monitor, printer, or speakers. Storage devices keep information so it can be used later, for example, a hard drive, USB flash drive, or CD.

The operating system, or OS, is a type of software that controls and manages the computer hardware and other software. It helps the computer run efficiently by managing memory, files, and devices, and provides a way for the user to interact with the machine. Common examples of operating systems include Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Word Processing

Word processing software is used to create, edit, and format documents. Pupils and teachers use it for writing letters, essays, reports, and notes. You can make text bold, italic, or underlined, change font styles and sizes, and align paragraphs to the left, right, centre, or justify. Word processors also allow you to add tables, images, headers, footers, and bullets or numbering to make documents clear and professional. Learning the steps to format documents properly is very important for exams, because questions often ask “Explain how to do it.”

Spreadsheets

A spreadsheet is a software program that arranges data in rows and columns, making it easy to organise, calculate, and analyse information. Spreadsheets are useful for tasks like keeping track of school marks, preparing budgets, or managing small business accounts. Common functions you should know include SUM to add numbers, AVERAGE to find the mean, and MIN or MAX to find the smallest or largest numbers. Spreadsheets also allow you to create charts or graphs to present your data visually.

Internet & Email

The internet is a global network that connects millions of computers. It allows people to access information, communicate quickly, and perform various tasks online. Email is one of the most common ways to communicate, where you can send messages, attach files, and reach people instantly. It has components like To, CC, BCC, Subject, and Body. Using the internet and email responsibly helps students in research, learning, and staying connected with teachers or classmates.

ICT Lab Safety & Ethics

Using computers safely is very important. In an ICT lab, you should sit properly to avoid back or neck strain, avoid eating or drinking near computers, switch off devices when not in use, and keep cables tidy to prevent accidents. Ethical behaviour is also crucial. Always respect other people’s work, avoid damaging hardware or software, protect your passwords, and never engage in cyberbullying. Safe and responsible use of computers is often tested in exams through scenario-based questions.

File Management

File management involves organising your files on a computer. You should know how to create, save, rename, and delete files, and arrange them into folders for easy access. Understanding file extensions, such as .docx for Word documents or .xls for Excel files, is also important. Exams may ask questions about how to perform these tasks or explain the difference between files and folders.

Networking Basics

Networking means connecting two or more computers so they can share information and resources. A Local Area Network (LAN) is usually used in schools or offices to connect computers in a small area. A Wide Area Network (WAN) covers a larger area, often using the internet. Networking allows files and devices to be shared, makes communication faster, and helps centralise data for easier management.

Security & Cyber Awareness

Computer security is about protecting your data and systems from damage, theft, or misuse. Common threats include viruses, malware, phishing, and hacking. To stay safe, always use strong passwords, install antivirus software, and avoid suspicious websites or emails. Being aware of cyber threats and knowing how to prevent them is an important topic in BECE exams.

Computational Thinking

Computational thinking is a way of solving problems like a computer scientist. It involves breaking a problem into smaller parts (decomposition), identifying patterns (pattern recognition), focusing on the important information only (abstraction), and writing step-by-step instructions to solve it (algorithms). Even simple logic-based thinking questions may appear in exams, so it’s good to practice how to explain your steps clearly.

Presentation Software

Presentation software is used to create slides for presenting information visually. You can add text, images, charts, or tables, and make the slides more interesting with transitions and animations. Students may be asked to explain how to create a simple presentation or describe the uses of such software in school projects or class presentations.
