Stitch along with me! Tips, Ideas & Inspiration in a relaxed flexible way that gives you permission to give Slow Stitching a go!

Slow Stitching is sewing by hand using needle and thread, enjoying the slow relaxing process without worrying about perfection or precision. The end project is not the sole goal but rather the making and creating process is equally important.

My name is Jo and I create Textile Collage Art using Slow Stitching and Hand Embroidery. I live and work in Northern B.C. Canada on the unceded ancestral lands of the Lheidli T’enneh Peoples, part of the Dakelh (Carrier) Peoples' territory.

From Beginners to Experienced, All are Welcome to join in as I share my Textile Art practice and thought processes.

My Stitched Artworks can be found in the book 350+ Quilting Tips, Techniques and Trade Secrets (2018) and have been featured in Art Quilting Studio magazine.

I'm in love with the texture created by crossing my Running Stitches. All you have to do is stitch rows in one direction (like left to right) and then pivot 180 degrees and cross those stitches. It creates a beautiful gathered puffed texture. This was stitched on an upholstery sample in this video: https://youtu.be/oTP1e5bO1hc but the effects are the same stitched on 2 or 3 layers of fabric or on fabric placed on a felt or batting base. Try it next time you're stitching. It's so satisfying!

Have you seen the stitching prompts for March? Every 3 days there are two new words to spark fresh ideas. I added to my heron and created a fun oval and spiral from the first few prompts. Swipe through to see the full prompt list. What will you create?

I loved drip dyeing this fabric. I’m a big fan of these small bottles too. Right out of the bottle they are ready to use. A little goes a long way, especially if you add water like I did. See the start to finish here: https://youtu.be/Dg3pQ3czH2w I plan on making more of these. I have so many ideas. Highly recommend trying these out! ~ Jo

My new favourite Pin Cushion! It's called a Biscornu and it's 2 offset squares stitched together. The construction is surprisingly simple. See my pin cushion come together https://youtu.be/3TyjSKYFevw I used wool felt but cotton fabric with the edges folded under would also be a good choice. I think this would be a great gift for anyone who sews. The embellishment options are endless!

Loving the simplicity of slow stitching using a limited colour palette! The stitching is simple too, using mostly Seed Stitch all over and adding French Knots for flowers and Blanket Stitch on the edges. I chose to leave the top frayed, open and unstitched to suggest an endless sky. It's a freeform landscape that was so relaxing to stitch. You can see the whole process here: https://youtu.be/xivJgNeMwNU What are you making today?

What is it about these little pouches? I keep making them! One with a Bird silhouette (see it here: https://youtu.be/oarhfm61YQU ) and another with Mushrooms (here: https://youtu.be/YikZsj7O0tA ). And I've made kits so you can make your own using fabrics curated from my stash. www.jomorphett.com/shop. So many possibilities! ~Jo
