A succession of political leaders have been trooping to Beijing in recent months. Is it an indication of a new world order?Â
Xi Jinping had a busy January. First came the Irish taoiseach, Micheál Martin. Then it was Mark Carney of Canada’s turn. He was followed by the Finnish prime minister, the Uruguayan president and then, last week, Keir Starmer.
But what does this rush to China mean? The Guardian leader writer Tania Branigan says much of it is to do with Trump. “There are real opportunities that people see in China – and at a point where the US looks so erratic, so hostile to people who have traditionally been among its staunchest allies. There is a sense that it just makes sense,” she tells Helen Pidd.
Yet, she says, that doesn’t mean that China will necessarily eclipse the US. “I don’t think it’s about one superpower replacing another, but I think it is about the end of American hegemony.”

Nick Fuentes, the 27-year-old white supremacist radicalising Maga (audio podcast) â–ş https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfIUQ...
“He’s called the US vice-president, JD Vance, a race traitor for marrying a non-white woman. He's said that Hitler is cool. He's not somebody most mainstream Conservatives want anything to do with,” says J Oliver Conroy Guardian US reporter on political culture.
When Tucker Carlson hosted Nick Fuentes on his podcast last month, a row erupted on social media. Critics condemned the platforming of a white supremacist, while others urged free speech.
Donald Trump said: “We’ve had some great interviews with Tucker Carlson, but you can’t tell him who to interview. Ultimately, people have to decide.”
Fuentes is a 27-year-old livestreamer with openly antisemitic and racist views, who has emerged into the Republican mainstream, causing a split within the party.
J Oliver Conroy, the Guardian US reporter on political culture, says: “For those Conservatives hoping to move the movement back in the direction of Reagan Republicanism, either because they agree with its tenets or because they’re worried the party is moving too far to the right, it’s going to be difficult. They are very aware of the fact they’re a bit out of step with the zeitgeist.”
Many have stated that what Fuentes represents is bigger than Trump and that’s part of what makes his views so explosive within the right. People are increasingly aware that Trump will not remain leader of the Republican party forever and that means there's going to be a “struggle” over his successor. Many on the Maga populist right, especially on the more radical end, have been disappointed that Trump didn’t turn out to be everything they wanted.
The Guardian reported: "This is much more than a controversy to interview Fuentes. It’s a whole referendum on the future of the American conservative movement.”
