Would an online course on making round & hollow molding planes be of interest? It will be step by step, including techniques and processes I have developed. Start with a piece of wood and blank irons and leave with (2) molding planes.

So pursuing the challenge of creating small batches of molding planes, specifically hollows & rounds. Rabbet planes to follow. This latest batch has European Beech bodies with custom fabricated plane irons. You can see the earlier planes above in Maple. I like challenges and this was one of them. Perfected some techniques and processes in the project for more production work. These planes are small but there is an incredible amount of precision involved with little room for error. They have been individually tested and perform very well. I standardized the sizes to conform to conventional, modern molding plane dimensions and decided on an average size of Hollow & Round No.7/8. This is an optimal size for most work from experience. #handtools #handtoolwoodworking #woodworking #handplanes

Recreated this "hollow" molding plane No. 8. The original is an Auburn Tool Company, NY c.1870 but beyond repair or restore. As seen, the sole is completely damaged. New version is "Maple" and after some testing it performs exceptionally well. I did save & reuse the iron from the original.

After research and a prototype or two, this is my 1st molding plane design. A No. 7/8 round plane. Wood is maple. Exceptional results after some testing in both hardwoods and softer woods. The (round) plane creates a cove profile.

Challenge was to define the escapement for evacuation of shavings and developing the wedge pocket correctly. Also, working to ensure the round profile matched the plane iron shape. Patience is key and to develop a methodological approach. Also wood selection and grain orientation is key to a successful hand plane.

Modern Hall Table with Angled Legs #furnitureconstruction #furnituredesign #furnituremaking I designed and made this new hall table to fit a particular spot in a client's home. The angled or splayed legs are a focal point as well as the wide maple top. Cherry rails below reinforce the stand and add to the aesthetic.

Enjoying my new Hand Tool Case. Not my original idea but I improvised the design to add 3 drawers for small tools. The original case is a Yeung Chan design. The drawers in the improvised, updated design keeps the tools from shifting around and falling out. The design is modified for my set of chisels and marking, measuring tools, Japanese saws, spokeshaves and hand planes. The Hand Tool Case is portable, I can attest to successfully moving it to another venue to talk about it. The top and bottom halves interlock through a lip and rabbet design in the outside case. It has a low enough profile to be portable. The cleverly designed integrated stands are designed to interlock. The stand parts are 1/4 in. Birch plywood. I have since set it up in my workshop along a wall on a torsion box type shelf lag bolted to the wall. This allows me to take advantage of the tool case when I'm not transporting it around to different shop spaces. I currently offer plans for this at www.woodskills.com/hand-tool-case
