Before taking my first cruise, I had no idea where to start. I had very little knowledge of the industry overall, and I had no idea 'how to cruise'. One thing was clear - there were so many things that could go wrong.
As soon as I boarded my first cruise ship, I knew immediately that this was a way to see the world that I believed in, and then my YouTube channel was born.
Here at 'Fraser at Sea', I want to use my channel to help you to plan and have the best cruise possible. I share with you my cruise and travel tips, take you away with me in my vlogs, and aim to hopefully immerse you in the experiences as we go.

When I boarded Sea Spirit 10 days ago, I really didn't know what to expect from this experience. It's been absolutely fascinating to deep dive into the world of expedition cruising, and I've had an unbelievable experience across this trip. 🤯

I've seen wildlife that I could only dream about before, including polar bears(!), walrus, arctic foxes and well over 30 whales - I'll be showing you all of these encounters in my YouTube content from this trip in due course. ad • @poseidonexpeditions | Wow - what a final stop! 🤩 This afternoon, we spent a few hours at Gravnesodden, which was our final landing of this Svalbard expedition cruise. 🌊

This is a really historic site, with the primary aspect being a huge burial site of whalers dating back to the early 1600’s.
.
It’s been amazing to have some time to just walk around this peaceful little spot, watching the birds, listening to the ocean, and just generally taking it all in. 🥹
.
Our next stop is Longyearbyen, which is where I’ll leave Sea Spirit to fly back home to the U.K. I’m not ready to leave quite yet though, so let’s not talk any more about that for now! 🤫 😂

Today was the most uncertain part of our itinerary - reaching the polar ice edge by ship depends massively on ice conditions, and also the overall sea conditions. I was absolutely thrilled when I woke up to realise that we’d successfully made it - what a feeling that was to open the curtains and see the ice surrounding the ship! 🤯
.
We spent a few hours cruising along the ice edge, and I was out on deck with my binoculars trying to spot wildlife for most of that time. I did see a few groups of seals, but no polar bears today… 🦭 👏🏼

Every evening of this trip, our meals have been served in the Dining Room, but tonight we’re dining al fresco on the open decks! 🍴

The onboard team are hosting a BBQ dinner tonight, which means that we get to take in all of these views as we eat. 🤩 We’ll stay in the bay during our meal, and then head back out ‘to sea’ afterwards to head to our next stop - I’m poised and ready for some dinner table wildlife spotting… 👀 📷 Wish me luck! 🤞🏼

This afternoon, we landed at Isflakbukta, which is our northernmost landing site of this expedition cruise. While it’s the furthest north we’re going to LAND, it’s not the furthest north that we’ll TRAVEL. If our conditions allow, we’re hoping to make it all the way to the Polar Ice Edge tomorrow - please keep everything crossed for us! 🤞🏼 🧊

Here are a few photos from our landing at Isflakbukta. The small hut on the beach was built to offer refuge to those in need - for example, sailors seeking shelter following their ship sinking. Can you imagine what this place has seen over the years? 🤔 🤯 Another interesting fact is that, as you can see in the photos, this area has lots of wood and other debris ashore a this has actually been transported here from Siberian rivers by Arctic Ice and ocean currents - incredible, right?! 🪵

As soon as I had this trip confirmed, I was SO excited at the thought of potentially getting to see a polar bear for the first time. We didn’t just get to see one today - we saw TWO! 👏🏼

The polar bear, which is the undisputed ‘King of the Arctic’ sits at the very top of the food chain, and is one of the most ‘hoped for’ animals when it comes to sightings by travellers to this corner of the world. 👀
.
I’m still in shock that we’ve managed to see two of these beautiful animals - here’s some photos to show you what I was able to capture with my camera! 📷 😊

Yesterday afternoon, we landed on a beautiful sandy beach on Svalbard’s East coast, and were disappointed to find that we were alone - we’d been hoping to find walrus here… 😔
.
After a few minutes, these guys turned up, and it was just amazing. I absolutely love wildlife encounters when I travel - they always make me so emotional, and just SO grateful to be there at that exact moment. 🙂
.
I genuinely think that, over the first few days of this cruise, I’ve seen more wildlife than I have in my multiple years of ocean cruising - the waters in this region seem to be so full of wildlife! 👏🏼 More on that soon! 👀

ad • @poseidonexpeditions | We’ve just completed our first ‘zodiac cruise’ on this itinerary, which involves us using the zodiacs (the small boats you can see in the second photo) to take a scenic cruise from Sea Spirit (the ship I’m currently cruising on)! 😊

We went to get a closer look at some of the nesting birds, and I was THRILLED to finally see a puffin - this is something I’ve wanted to do for SUCH a long time! 🥹

After seeing the birds, we went for a closer look at the glacier. When we reached our ‘viewing position’, we sat in silence (and awe) at what was in front of us - have a look through these photos to get a feel for this experience! 🤯

I get the feeling that I’ll be wearing mine a lot when I go back home - I absolutely love it - it’s SO comfortable and warm (which is important where we’re currently cruising - it’s about 5C / 41F! 🥶).
.
You can also see in this photo that I’m wearing professional boots. Every passenger onboard receives a pair of boots to use during the cruise, but they all get returned before we head home. 👢

This afternoon I boarded Sea Spirit, the expedition ship operated by Poseidon Expeditions. Our sailaway from Longyearbyen, where I’ve spent the last two nights, was unforgettable - the scenery around that area is just gorgeous! 🤩

Over the course of this cruise, we’re hoping to complete the very ambitious goal of a full circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Whether or not we’ll complete it remains to be confirmed - ‘watch this space’, and I’ll bring you along for the adventure with me! 👏🏼 ⛴️
