Growing up in the 80s and 90s I was really into reading manga, and that obsession has carried me through life.
Here's a (growing) list of manga that I would recommend any reader, of varying levels of popularity, from all sorts of different genres, and about a lot of different themes!
➡️ Go Go Loser Ranger! — What if Power Rangers were actually sadistic monsters that succeeded in defeating the monsters but then subjugated them into a pony show for the masses?
➡️ Frieren: Beyond Journey's End — Possibly the most effecting piece of literature I've ever read. This tale with magic, adventure, and the subtle boringness of the day-to-day life is a study into looking back on your life with melancholy and regret, and how you should move on when you realize the missed opportunities of the past.
➡️ Bakuman — This is a very meta series about the craft of creating manga. Centered around 2 teenagers who discover their dream of the craft, the series is an insightful look into how the business of manga works: the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of people who pour their lives in service of art... and sometimes fame.
➡️ Naruto — This manga about ninjas is a titan of the industry, becoming a pillar of its publisher for the entire run of the series. I much prefer to read this story rather than watch it, because the anime is notorious for coming up with side quests and stories to pad out the time, allowing for the manga source to chart the way forward.
➡️ Kakegurui — The strength of this manga lies in its art, as well as its inventiveness. Set into a (very realistic) school where all of the students love to gamble, the art of winning by any means necessary is how almost all business is conducted. Losers are indebted to the victors, the weak become fodder for the strong. It is in this backdrop that a mysterious new student enters the arena. Is she calculating, crazy, or just doing it for the love of the game?
➡️ Yakitate Japan!! — On the very other end of the spectrum is Yakitate, a gag cooking competition manga centered around the world of making bread and puns. The main character is a country bumpkin with a talent for learning the pastry arts, and he gets swept into a world full of intrigue. The reactions of the judges are silly and ludicrous, but the heart is real.
➡️ My Dress Up Darling — This manga is about 2 things: being brave enough to chase your passion even if it is uncool or not accepted by society, and a refreshing take on the romance genre devoid of the usual tropes. When one character realizes that they like the other, it isn't a sordid tale of misunderstandings and heartbreak; it's more about how they can express that affection through supporting each other's dreams.
➡️ One Punch Man — Somehow this manga manages to get you to believe that the latest villain will be the one that is strong enough to take out the main character every single time. I suppose that One Punch Man will appeal the most to someone who is a seasoned veteran of the shonen/martials arts/Dragonball genres because One Punch Man is a satire of all of those tropes, but I think anyone can appreciate the art of the manga. It has the best depictions of fights that I've seen in a long time.

⚡️ When Master Vile's plan to destroy the Command Center succeeds, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are left powerless and scrambling for a means to survive.
When they comb the ruins of their headquarters, they are surprised to find the newly assembled Zeo Crystal, which leads them to a new Power Chamber—a place that had been constructed as a backup in case of catastrophe!

⚡️ The first Power Rangers movie is 31 years old this year (you may start crying now), and here are a few pieces of trivia about the movie that you may not have known about!
➡️ Catherine Sutherland, who played the character Kat, first auditioned for the part of Dulcea. She was not cast partly because she looked too young for the part, but the producers kept her in mind when the successor to Kimberly was created.
➡️ The first time the Rangers meet Ivan Ooze in the construction site, they were supposed to fight giant rat monsters. However, the suits that were created for Ooze's minions were deemed to be cheap-looking for a cinematic movie. Thus, they fought the Ooze look-alike creatures that we see instead. The rats were then recycled for use in episodes of the TV show.
➡️ The iconic line of "I'm a frog :(" was ad-libbed by Johnny Yong Bosch, as it reflected his personal feelings at the time that having the Frog as his Ninjetti animal spirit was lame.

⚡️ Did you know that Kimberly comes back as the Pink Ranger?
In a standalone story in the comics, we meet Kimberly at the end of the Pan Global Games that she left the Power Rangers to compete in.
Having won her gymnastics events, she is now trying to reach her mother on the phone to no avail.
Sensing that something has gone wrong, Kimberly decides to travel to a sleepy French village in search of her mom and step dad.
She arrives to a desolate town and an empty house to boot.
Now fully on alert—yet without her Ranger powers—Kimberly does the next best thing and suits up for battle.
Armed with a bow and an emergency communicator, she follows the only noise she’s heard since stepping into the village and encounters monsters!
Jumping into action, Kimberly is able to distract the villains long enough to help a local escape.
She comes to find out his name: Serge; and gets an update about the situation that she finds herself in: recently, the village has been overtaken by monsters and outside communication has been cut off!
Realizing that the threat is beyond her current means, Kimberly decides to utilize her communicator and reaches out to Zordon for help from the Power Rangers, only to find that similarly he, too, has lost contact with the heroes.
When Alpha 5 chimes in with the fact that Kimberly still possesses her link to the Morphin Grid, Zordon offers a gamble to help: the Sword of Light.
As a direct conduit to Zordon’s power, the Sword is able to temporarily activate Kimberly’s link, making her the All-New Pink Ranger!
Can she find and save her loved ones before it is too late?
