Do invasive honeybees have a negative impact on native plants?
There is strong scientific evidence that invasive honeybees (Apis mellifera), particularly when managed or present in large feral populations, can have negative effects on the pollination of native plants. These effects occur through several mechanisms:
Competition for Floral Resources: Honeybees are highly efficient at collecting nectar and pollen, often removing up to 80% of available pollen in a single day. This severely disrupts the food supply for native bees and other pollinators, potentially reducing their populations and their ability to effectively pollinate native plants.
Displacement of Native Pollinators: High densities of honeybees can outcompete native pollinators for resources, leading to a reduction in native bee abundance and diversity. This displacement can disrupt long-standing plant-pollinator mutualisms, reducing the effectiveness of pollination services needed by native plants.
Inferior Pollination Quality: Honeybee visits are often less effective than native pollinator visits for many native plants. Studies show that offspring of plants pollinated by honeybees are less likely to survive and reproduce than those pollinated by native insects, largely because honeybees may increase self-pollination (inbreeding) by repeatedly visiting the same plant, leading to lower seedling fitness and potential long-term impacts on native plant populations.
Promotion of Invasive Plant Spread: Honeybees sometimes preferentially visit invasive plants, potentially increasing these plants' reproductive success and leading to further displacement of native flora.
Disease Spread: Honeybees can also transmit diseases and parasites to native bee populations, compounding competitive pressures.
In summary, the introduction and proliferation of invasive honeybees do generally have negative impacts on the pollination of native plants by outcompeting native pollinators, diminishing pollination quality, and shifting plant community dynamics in ways that may be detrimental to ecosystem health.
