Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) involves a suite of technologies designed to prevent CO2 from entering the atmosphere or to remove it directly. Globally, these techniques are categorized into three main stages: Capture, Utilisation, and Storage.
🌍 CCUS: India’s Game-Changer for Net-Zero 2070! 🇮🇳Did you know that the Union Budget 2026 has allocated a massive ₹20,000 Crore for Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS)? For all UPSC and competitive exam aspirants, these latest innovations and policy updates are MUST-KNOW for GS-3!

1️⃣ Breakthrough Capture Innovations (S&T)Moving beyond traditional methods, these high-tech solutions are making headlines:

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Known as "Molecular Sponges," these crystalline materials selectively adsorb CO_2 with extreme efficiency.

Cryogenic Carbon Capture (CCC): Cools flue gas to -100°C to freeze CO_2into a solid. It is nearly 50% more cost-effective than old chemical methods.

Direct Air Capture (DAC): Massive fan systems that "scrub" CO_2 directly from the ambient atmosphere—crucial for removing legacy emissions.

2️⃣ Carbon Utilisation: Turning Waste to Wealth (CCU)Captured carbon isn't just stored; it’s being repurposed:

Algae-based Bio-CCU: Using microalgae to consume CO_2 and converting them into Bio-Jet Fuel and organic fertilizers.

Carbon Mineralization: Injecting CO_2 into concrete or bricks to lock it away permanently as a solid mineral.

Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW): Spreading crushed silicate rocks on farmland to absorb CO_2 while naturally boosting soil nutrients.

3️⃣ India’s Bold Policy Shift (2025-26)Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) 2026: India has activated its domestic carbon market. Companies can now earn and trade Carbon Credit Certificates (CCCs) for every tonne of CO_2 they capture.

The "Hub & Cluster" Model: Industrial zones in Gujarat and Odisha are sharing a single CO_2 pipeline and storage site to slash infrastructure costs.

Green Steel Taxonomy: A new star-rating system for steel producers. To get a high rating, emissions must be kept below 2.2 tonnes of CO_2 per tonne of steel using CCUS.
