We are the Shum brothers based out of the Green Mountains in Vermont. We come from a long line of native Vermonters who, for over 100 years, hunted some of the same mountains we do today.
Our goal is to share our passion, experiences, and knowledge of mountain hunting in the big woods of the Northeast with our fellow hunters both near and far. We owe everything to the mountains we hunt and the animals we love to pursue. Join the Northeast Hunters’ community chasing the ever elusive Wandering Whitetail.

12/01/24 ~ A last day VT rifle buck to cap off a grueling, yet action-packed season with many close encounters and “almosts.” I got into extremely heavy feeding sign the evening prior (Saturday), high up on the mountain. So I made the gameplan to attack it from above first thing Sunday morning to catch the deer filtering back up the mountain feeding and heading into the spruces. My Stepdad Brad joined me for a speedy 1.2 mile hike in to execute the planned “Death from Above” at daylight. As we crested the ledge-face to drop down into the area we planned to split off and sit, I took a single step at a time, scanning the woods below. I could see a bedded deer at least 120 yards below us. It was a nice buck and he was facing right up at me. With nothing but skyline to our backs, I couldn’t risk sneaking down further and waited for an opportunity to shoot. He finally stood up out of his bed and I settled onto my butt and took the shot down through the whips. He never flinched! Racked another and shot and he took off. I sent one more shot on the run as he went out of sight. As I’m trying to collect myself, not feeling great about those shots (misses), Brad spotted him down below us, confused and doubling back to make an attempted escape. He looked up at me and one shot to the base of his neck landed him in his final resting place. The memories made this season far outweigh everything else. Another special day in the deer woods. Beyond thankful for this beautiful Vermont buck!

11/17/24 ~ This hunt was one for the ages! Our plan was to hunt together opening weekend and split off at some point each day. After a close encounter and no shot opportunity on a nice buck Saturday after calling him in, we got back out after em. We worked a series of ledgey flats that have been great for deer activity in past years. Our plan was to call aggressively and just poke along on the crunchy crisp morning, hoping to cross paths with a good buck. It wasn’t long before we heard a snap and Mike turns to have a nice 5pt come straight to him, in a stare down at 15 yards! Although it was the perfect opportunity, he chose to pass him because he was just a bit too young. I snort wheezed at the buck and thrashed the leaves and he stood his ground and then slowly worked off down below us. As we watched him sneak below, we got another look at him and that’s when Mike said “There’s another deer below him! A bigger deer!” We waited and then the deer stepped up and towards us a bit further. It was a nice racked buck! I took aim and was getting settled to shoot him when he took a few steps and got behind some trees. Mike had a clear shot and said he was going to shoot. I said okay and plugged my ears as he was just behind me and he sent one down through the woods about 80 yards! The buck was hit and came running up through the woods where I sent 3 more his way, slipping and falling in the process. He stood for a bit and then crashed and we knew we had a nice buck down! A memorable teamwork hunt, shared between brothers on the most sacred weekend. Opening weekend of rifle season holds a special place in our hearts. Congrats to Mike on a beautiful buck! Here’s to many more memories made together.
