Miles Canyon is a narrow section of the Yukon River formed when fast water cut through volcanic basalt over thousands of years. It created steep canyon walls and strong current in a tight channel.

The Yukon River system has long been used by Indigenous peoples for travel, trade, fishing, and seasonal movement between regions. This stretch of river was part of established routes connecting communities across the territory.

๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜†:
During the Klondike Gold Rush (1896โ€“1899), Miles Canyon became a major obstacle for stampeders traveling to Dawson City. The rapids were difficult to navigate, and several boats were lost. Many travelers portaged around the canyon.

In 1900, a toll bridge was built near the site to allow safer crossing as river traffic increased.

๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ:
Miles Canyon reflects three layers of history: Indigenous river use, Gold Rush travel routes, and early infrastructure development in the Yukon.

Today it is a historic and protected area with walking trails and viewpoints near Whitehorse.

Emerald Lake is located along the South Klondike Highway in southern Yukon, between Whitehorse and Carcross. The lake is known for its turquoise and green water, caused by white marl deposits left behind by glaciers during the last ice age.

The surrounding limestone hills were formed millions of years ago when this area was covered by a shallow sea. Today, Emerald Lake is one of the most photographed stops along the highway and part of the historic route connected to the Klondike Gold Rush.

Atlin Mountain sits right above the town of Atlin and has been part of the areaโ€™s story for a long time.

History: During the Klondike Gold Rush era, miners and traders passed through the Atlin area. The mountain was a constant landmark above the routes into the district, tied to the early mining boom that put Atlin on the map.

Culture: For locals and Indigenous communities, the mountain is part of everyday identity โ€” itโ€™s just โ€œthe mountainโ€ that frames the lake and town. It represents the remote, northern way of life and the deep connection to the land.

Tourism: Today itโ€™s a big draw for visitors. People come for the views over Atlin Lake, hiking in summer, and snowmobiling and hill climbs in winter. Itโ€™s one of the main reasons Atlin is known for its dramatic scenery.

In honour and remembrance of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls from Yukon and Northern British Columbia.

This refers to ongoing cases of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who have gone missing or been murdered in Canada. The issue has been examined in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (2016โ€“2019), which identified multiple contributing factors, including the long-term impacts of colonial policies, systemic racism and sexism, socioeconomic inequities, and gaps in policing and justice responses.

Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport is the main airport in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. It has flights all year that connect the city to places like Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. The airport works in very cold and snowy weather and handles passengers, cargo, and emergency flights. It gets busier in summer when more tourists visit, and it is an important way for people to travel in and out of the region.
