India's Wild Outdoor

Jim Corbett: From hunter to hero of the wild. A man who traded his rifle for a pen, and left behind a legacy of conservation.

Jim Corbett was a legendary British-Indian hunter, naturalist, and author known for tracking and eliminating man-eating tigers and leopards in the jungles of colonial India. Born in 1875 in Nainital, Corbett became famous for his unmatched tracking skills and bravery, having killed at least 19 tigers and 14 leopards โ€” many of which had claimed hundreds of human lives.

But Corbettโ€™s legacy goes far beyond hunting. In his later years, he underwent a profound transformation โ€” from a fearless hunter to a passionate wildlife conservationist. Disturbed by the rapid decline in Indiaโ€™s tiger population and the destruction of forests, he became a strong advocate for protecting Indiaโ€™s rich biodiversity.

Through his bestselling books like "Man-Eaters of Kumaon," "The Temple Tiger," and "Jungle Lore," Jim Corbett used his storytelling to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the delicate balance between humans and nature. His efforts laid the foundation for Indiaโ€™s modern conservation movement.

In honor of his contributions, Indiaโ€™s first national park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1957 โ€” a sanctuary for Bengal tigers and countless other species, symbolizing the legacy of a man who chose to protect the wild he once hunted.
