Sustainable Living for the Family, Health and Home

If you homeschool, how is your homeschooling year going? We are moving through our family, and solo subjects, and tailoring curriculum to fit our needs, goals, and efficiency. I tend to be eclectic, and I always tailor any curriculum we use, so that it may serve us well.

Science is one of my favorite subjects, and with my background in health and medicine, I always love teaching my children about topics from this area, and how our food affects our health, and wellness. With that said, I often have a book or 2 in my hand, and I love sharing what I find valuable with my children, whether it's an adult medical book I'm personally enjoying, or a book suited to their grade level.

In a recent lesson, after reading a chapter in our Science Spine book, I then dug deeper and discussed the effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup on our body and did a simple diagram of the chemical structures of fructose and glucose (FYI: It's not to scale, nor specific; it's just a general overview so that they could grasp the concept. It brought me fondly back to my organic chemistry days in college).

We talked about free radicals, as well, and how they can literally interact with, and associate with the chemical bonds amongst our cells, causing cell damage, inflammation, and a spiral of "run-down" events, that break our health, and speed up the aging process.

After our discussion, I asked them to summarize what we discussed in their journals, and translate their understanding in their own words, and pictures. Practicing this skill of summarization, and incorporating new knowledge like this, is so important, not only for the simple act of understanding an important concept, but also for the ability to express themselves well, with precision, and skill.

It's times like these, that remind me of the importance of incorporating these everyday concepts, and practical tips, that our children need to know beyond the academics.

These are the substantive things that will help to guide them, keep them healthy, and nurture the need for all of us to be constantly learning and growing.

Our first Apple blossom. Wow, is the fragrance amazing, and the flowers are just beautiful. As I grow in my gardening journey, I am just in awe of the wonderful plants, and blessings of just being in the garden, surrounded by YHVH's creation. Just absolutely amazing.
