Election History

Welcome to Election History, where we are focused on the history of campaigns, elections, candidates, political parties, and the likes. I'm Dave Trotter and I've worked in politics since 1991. I have a MA from McGill University in Political Science, focused on voting behavior.

Election History

A lot has happened over the last five months! Five months ago, I announced that I was taking a break from YouTube because of issues with copyright strikes (all which I have won so far). I was at the point of even quitting YouTube. But after your massive response and appreciation for this channel, I got back on the horse and continued to build this channel. I haven't been able to build as quickly as I wanted to, but have come back nonetheless.

Over those months, my videos have done quite well. Yes, some haven't done as well as others, but have done well nonetheless. The fact that my most recent "poorest performing video" about Arizona has over 16k views and 3.8k watch hours, I'll take that performance. Basically, I see promise.

The last time I "lost" subscribers on this channel was in April of last year, which was in the early days of this channel. But, over the last 28 days, I have gained 692 subscribers (which is a slow month), even though I have only uploaded two videos. On Voting Trend, my current political channel, I have lost 29 subscribers with seven videos uploaded.

With that, I'm all in on building Election History and abandoning Voting Trend. And honestly, I hated doing the other channel anyway. Yes, it brought in a financial windfall during the election in 2024, but that's it. Everything else has been a nightmare. With Election History, it allows for more nuance and also allows me to create something that is truly educational. So, from this point on, I'm going to be working on this channel nearly full time and building it into a strong YouTube channel that, hopefully, I can dedicate all my time to.

Election History

Hello everyone. I've just finished the audio recording for the next video and it should be coming out shortly. It's about 17 political quotes that ended campaigns, political ambitions, or just and indication that the end was near.

But there is one thing that I want to talk about. On December 26th, 2024, on my way to visit six presidential museums, I started getting a canker sore in the bottom left of my mouth. A few days later, I fell violently ill with a temperature of 102.2 degrees. Eventually returned home, and the canker sore actually had swollen over. I went to get it seen about a few weeks later, but I was sent to four different doctors, which took about 8 months (great American health care), in which the last doctor told me that the procedure would cost $800 because my insurance wouldn't cover it because, you know, "out of network".

That was in September of 2025. It's now nearly June of 2026 and I have not had the sore removed. Basically, it has turned into a big bubble and has somewhat solidified, which is nearly the same size as my entire lip.

When I speak normally to someone, I really don't notice it. And the same thing with doing a live stream, I can easily speak without it getting in the way. But when I am reading a script when recording a video, this sore always causes troubles which takes double or triple the amount of time to record audio than in the past, because the sore is always getting in the way. I don't know why this only affects me when I read a script. Maybe it is that certain words that I write next to each other make it harder to pronounce, but it is hard regardless.

Over the last few weeks, I've been thinking about using an AI voice for my videos. It would actually be a clone of my actual voice and would sound exactly like me. But it would be AI nonetheless. To tell you the truth, I probably would have had an extra five or six videos released if this mouth problem didn't exist.

But then this comes to the biggest problem...will people think that my videos are AI produced because I'm using AI for my voice? Obviously, I do all my own research and write all of my own scripts. I also get everything else for the video, including the video clips that every damn media company wants to copyright claim against! Yes, these are still my videos and I want people to know that they are my videos. They are, and never will be AI slop, but I fear that an AI voice would make people think so.

While the swollen-over canker sore has been a big reason for delays, so has the fact that I really, really, really, really hate doing the audio part of these videos. That's been compounded because of the whole swollen canker sore problem. But one issue I have is called Stealth Dyslexia, which allows me to almost do everything except read things clearly aloud. Basically, when I read aloud, I'm anticipating what the next word is going to be, which will eventually be wrong, which will require me to read the entire sentence (or paragraph) again. Usually a 40 minute script will take 2 to 3 hours, with audio editing being another 3-4 hours, requiring me to have an entire "audio day" set aside.

If I did use an AI voice, I have thought about putting a quick disclaimer at the start of the video letting people know that this is my voice and AI, and explaining the reasons why I am using AI for my voice. When this sore is finally removed (which I have no idea when that might actually be), that might help but the Stealth Dyslexia is still an issue. However, if the AI voice sounds completely unnatural (which I don't think it will but who knows), then I will keep doing the old, ineffective way.

So, I wanted to get people's feedback on this. Please comment down below.

Seems like the title of my last video has really triggered some (not all) conservatives. Well, that's more of a "you" problem than a "me" problem. Might want to watch the video before commenting.

Hey everyone! The next video is ready. The video about California's electoral history is done. It's nearly 1 1/2 hours long. However, I can't release it yet. I'll let you guess in the poll below why.

I've been thinking about doing some live stream content here on Election History. Some of the content would be playing election videos games. Are there any other ideas that you have that would make for interesting live stream content. Thanks for your input. (Note: nothing about current politics).

Election History

Hey everyone. I was out of town for a while and just came back this week. I'll be working on the next video about the political history of California, which will be out soon. I will be out of town again at the start of May, so hopefully I will have something then. Just so you know, I'm still here.

Okay, I give up! Nobody got my pun from the 2003 Recall Election in 2003 and how Loretta Sanchez defeated bombastic Bob Dornan.

Bob Dornan was a huge proponent of the B-1 bomber. Therefore, he earned the nickname "B-1 Bob". So now you know. 😃

So...I've bitten off a lot. I decided to do the next video about the 2020 Democratic primary. 29 CANDIDATES! This is a lot harder than I thought.

I'm thinking about doing some smaller video in the middle of the week that talk about other election topics, such as the "worst political quotes", "worst campaigns", and other stuff like that. They aren't the deep dive videos, but are videos that could be nice little filler videos every now and then. What do you think? Vote and comment below.

Hello everyone. There will be no video this week. While I am working on the next video, I'm taking a little bit of a breather. Remember, I do these videos 100% without any help, and each video takes about 25 to 40 hours, depending on the length. So, see you next week!
