Anatomy of placenta
Placenta is a temporary organ formed during pregnancy.
It is discoid (round/oval) in shape.
•Average weight: 500–600 g
•Average diameter: 15–20 cm
•Average thickness: 2–3 cm
Surfaces
Fetal surface: smooth, shiny, covered by amnion
Maternal surface: rough, reddish, divided into cotyledons
Parts / Structures
Cotyledons: lobules on maternal surface (about 15–20)
Intervillous spaces: spaces containing maternal blood
Chorionic villi: finger-like projections for exchange
Chorionic plate: fetal side layer
Basal plate (decidua basalis): maternal side layer
•Umbilical Cord Attached to fetal surface
•Contains 2 umbilical arteries + 1 umbilical vein
Covered by Wharton’s jelly Membranes
•Amnion (inner membrane)
•Chorion (outer membrane)

Physiology of Placenta
The physiology of the placenta mainly involves providing support for fetal growth and maintaining pregnancy. It functions as an exchange organ by supplying oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the fetus and removing carbon dioxide and waste products from fetal blood. It also acts as a selective barrier, allowing useful substances like glucose, amino acids, and antibodies (IgG) to pass while blocking many harmful agents. In addition, the placenta has an important endocrine role by producing hormones such as hCG, progesterone, estrogen, and human placental lactogen (hPL), which help in maintaining pregnancy, supporting uterine growth, and preparing the breasts for lactation.
