“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of goodwill.” (Luke 2:14)
Christmas is a time of joy and celebration. We rejoice because God has taken human form in the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:14). By becoming one of us, God enters fully into our human condition and understands our joys, fears, and suffering.
The first Christmas was not marked by comfort or festivity. In effect, the Holy Family faced many hardships. There was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7). While human beings failed to receive Him (John 1:11), animals offered Him their shelter. The Child was born in poverty and humility.
From the very beginning, Jesus was surrounded by fear and danger. Threatened by Herod (Matthew 2:13), He had to flee with His family to Egypt (Matthew 2:14-15). Thus, the Son of God became a refugee, sharing the fate of so many displaced people in our world. This shows that Christmas is a source of joy for those who are comfortable and a source of hope for those who suffer.
As we celebrate, let us remember the many people who endure hardship because of human greed and selfishness: the innocent in prison, the homeless, migrants and refugees, and all who live in fear and uncertainty.
Amid the darkness of our world, the light of Christ continues to shine (John 1:5). That light first shone upon the humble shepherds (Luke 2:8-12), filling them with great joy (Luke 2:10). God chose the lowly to receive the Good News (Luke 1:52).
May the joy of the newborn King bring consolation to the suffering, healing to the brokenhearted (Isaiah 61:1), and, above all, peace to our world (John 14:27).
I wish you all peace, hope, and the true joy of Christmas.
#Claretians in #Cameroon join the world to pray for the repose of the soul of #BenedictXVI. His first pastoral visit to Africa from March 17-23 was to Cameroon and #Angola. Adieu, a great theologian. Thank you for encouraging the #Church in #Africa to work in service to #Reconciliation, #Justice and #Peace. Your legacy to Africa, Africae Munus, is a spark of #Hope for #Africa.
