Welcome to hands-on gardening tips, tricks, and unique solutions to gardening problems for home gardeners. Beginner gardeners, veteran gardeners, and those in between are welcome. I have gardened for 40+ years in different zones and have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all in gardening, even if you are in the same zone. Though I garden in Zone 8, I have a relatively short growing season and have adapted my gardening efforts to the circumstances present in my local area and climate conditions.
I love to grow easy perennials, annuals, and vegetables. Come on along, and let's garden!

How did your weekend go? Did you get to spend time in your garden or do other fun stuff? We were in Sacramento and I made a stop by my favorite nursery on our way. I found a couple things to add to my garden.
Anyways, we came home to frigid weather! Can you believe that? We are getting rain and temps down into the upper 30's at night. I did not know if my gorgeous iris would be zapped or not so I took a video of the ones that are blooming now (you won't believe how many new ones opened since the last video) and some of the roses too. Join me tomorrow morning (Thursday, May 28) for a walk through the garden on a drizzling cold day! By next week these blooms may be spent or they may be spared! I did two thumbnails and I did not know which one suited it best. So I am testing both.

I won't have a video today but I am scheduling one for Sunday. I was asked about this and so I thought it would be easy enough to get done. I was able to video different sections throughout that garden. My greenhouse is too hot to video in now that it has warmed up, my camera shuts off on me. So outdoors it is. Not that that bothers anyone. So enjoy the holiday weekend and tune in Sunday morning for the latest from my Flower Patch!
Watch to the end as I have a little chickie update!

Well I have done what I keep telling everyone not to do, overwhelmed myself with tasks and started to let the garden create stress rather than relaxation. So I decided to stop and do a little chat with everyone who may have started to do the same and why that can create problems for you. I am going to take the rest of the week off, I think, so you may not hear from me for a week. But you never know, I may get an idea and not be able to contain myself. I am giving myself the option to just putter in the garden without worrying about recording it. (unless I can't help myself)
Lets chat this morning!

My irises are blooming! I was so worried the strange spring weather might damage the buds, but they are putting on a beautiful show.
Come along for a peaceful garden walk as we see which varieties are blooming right now, while a few others are still waiting their turn a bit later in the season. There are also several other plants absolutely shining in the garden at the moment, and I share a little of those, too.
Today I also tackled half of the damaged area in the Secret Cottage Garden, and that section is finally ready for planting. I’ll be sharing more of that soon, along with the progress on creating my outdoor summer oasis on the back deck. So many lovely things are coming together, but for today, let’s simply enjoy the irises in bloom. The video will be viewable Sunday morning, May 17

I’m a bit slow getting today’s video out, but I truly think it’s a good one. Did you know May is Mental Health Awareness Month? I honestly didn’t either until I came across an article about how gardening benefits the brain. That sent me down a deep dive into the science behind it, and I found it absolutely fascinating.
You may already know some of this, but I thought it made such a wonderful topic for a cozy garden chat video.
I’m hoping to have it viewable within the next hour, so keep an eye out — I’d love for you to join me for this one.

Wow, today was actually hot! I had to get my hair done in a neighboring town and it was 95 degrees at 1pm. Yikes, it got into the upper 80's here. I have got to get my small plants and seedlings into the ground or I will lose them. I am juggling so many things right now but it is that time of year.
But the video I have for you tomorrow morning is in response to a question I had and to dispute many false claims you see about this subject. I deep dived into the science (because I am a nerd) and unraveled what is fiction and what is real. So please join me for a frank discussion Tuesday, May 12.
This may help you with your container plants and even plants in your garden.

Happy Saturday, everyone! The new baby chicks are settling in so well, and mama hen is doing a wonderful job caring for them. I included a sweet little clip of them at the end of tomorrow’s video. It will be posted May 10.
In the video, I take you along on a peaceful early May walk through my gardens. It’s a slow and relaxing look at where the garden is at the start of the season, and over the coming months, I’ll share how everything grows and changes through summer. The warmer nighttime temperatures have finally arrived, so I’ve also begun moving some plants out from the greenhouse and into the garden.
Enjoy!

Hello Everyone! It is to be a sunny 75 degree day and I intend to enjoy as much time outdoors as I can. If you haven't noticed yet, I did get a video up this morning, this one was another request from a viewer. I did not know if I would get it up today. I was having so much fun outside yesterday, weeding, checking on the roses and attempting to create a better enclosure for the hen and chicks that I did not stay at my desk long for editing.
Be sure to stay to the end, where I share how my slug/snail trap worked and what else I caught in it! I know it will help reduce the population of these pests in my garden without harming anything else.
Happy Warm Weather!

It’s a rainy Monday here, but honestly, I’m not complaining. It’s giving me the perfect excuse to catch up on all those indoor projects I’ve been putting off.
I also edited a video update for you—showing how all my seeds and cuttings are coming along—and then we head outside to take a look at where everything will be planted as this garden begins to take shape.
Hope you enjoy coming along with me! 💚 Video is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, in the morning.

It’s been a full Saturday over here, but the good kind—busy in a way that feels both fun and productive.
One of the sweetest things we did was bring home a couple of chicks for my broody hen. She had been so determined, sitting day after day on eggs that just weren’t going to hatch, and I couldn’t help but feel for her. She really wanted to be a mama.
So we stopped by the feed store to see if they had any chicks, and they did. I came home with two—a Cuckoo Marans and an Americana. That evening, after dark, I gently tucked them under her and hoped for the best.
I’ll admit, I was a little nervous she might not accept them… but she did. And now she is one very proud mama hen.
I’ll share some clips of them in an upcoming video—they’re just the sweetest.
As for tomorrow’s video, I do have one scheduled to go up. If I’m being honest, it’s one of those I wasn’t completely happy with. I even considered refilming the whole thing, but in the end I decided to let it go and share it anyway. Sometimes I think I can be a bit too picky, and this time I chose to move forward instead.
