Deck Officer Decoded

On a night watch, you spot a red–green sidelights with a white masthead light and you say, “Power-driven vessel.” Fine—but then the Chief or examiner asks, “Which rule? Who is stand-on? What action will you take?” That’s where most people freeze, because they learned lights as patterns, not as COLREG logic. Lights only help you identify the vessel and its aspect; the COLREG rules decide whether it’s crossing, head-on, or overtaking—and who must keep course or alter early and boldly. The professional habit is simple: see the light pattern → quote the rule → confirm the vessel’s status → decide stand-on/give-way → state the action.
