Lucknow Charbagh Railway Station, officially known as Lucknow NR (LKO), is one of the most famous and historic railway stations in India. Established in 1926 during the British period, the station is a major transportation hub and an architectural landmark of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
The station was designed by British architect J. H. Horniman and showcases a magnificent blend of Indo-Saracenic, Mughal, and Rajput architecture. Its palace-like structure, grand domes, arched entrances, and intricate design make it one of the most beautiful railway stations in the country. The building’s layout is often said to resemble a chessboard, highlighting symmetry and planning.
Lucknow Charbagh station primarily operates on Broad Gauge railway lines, connecting Lucknow to major cities across India. Earlier, the station also had Meter Gauge (Chhoti Line) platforms, which were used for short-distance passenger trains to nearby regions. These chhoti line platforms were smaller and mostly served local routes, many of which have now been converted to broad gauge or discontinued.
Named after the Persian concept of “Charbagh” (four-part garden), the station reflects the cultural heritage and royal history of Awadh. Today, Charbagh Railway Station is not only an important railway junction but also a tourist attraction, admired for its history, design, and engineering excellence.
