I’m John F.K. Small, an author, illustrator, storyteller, and artist building a more focused creative life after 60.
This channel is about making room for meaningful creative work through illustration, writing, memory, nature, gentle living, and neurodivergent ways of seeing.
I share reflections on creative focus, simplifying, finishing one meaningful piece at a time, and working with a mind that often sees too many possibilities at once.
You’ll also find quiet art process videos, lake/ocean and nature moments, story-world fragments, family history, and observations shaped by autism, spatial sequence synesthesia, memory, and imagination.
My hope is that what I’m learning may encourage you too — especially if you’re an artist, writer, older creative, neurodivergent person, late bloomer, or someone trying to make room for work that matters.

Discovering and archiving family photos and documents can be awesome - but sometimes, it can be daunting and requires reading through an old newspaper, yup - with tiny print.
As this one may contain important and relevant information, since it shows my great grandfather's name, (Thomas K. Small) hand-written near the top, this paper is dated 1873.
Trying to decipher through what would have prompted the preservation of this part of a newspaper. This appears to be the 'South Register' newspaper out of Yarmouth Port.
My great grandfather lived in North Truro, both Yarmouth Port and North Truro are on Cape Cod.
