I used to be VERY into gaming.I could sit at my PC for 9 hours, knee-deep in Monster cans.My weight slowly ballooning up. My friend Brandon still lovingly refers to this time in my life as the era of “Chungus Jake”.For my social circle at the time, what I was doing was totally “normal”.But the truth is that there is no “normal”.Normal is what you make it.If it’s “normal” for your friends and family to be lean and fit, then you are significantly more likely to be lean and fit.If you hang around with people in good shape, you will start to get into better shape.It’s kind of uncomfortable to think about, but I think we all know it’s true.We underestimate the role of our environment in our fitness results.If you spend all of your time around people who don’t exercise or eat well, you are significantly more likely to be the same.I’m not saying you need to “cut someone out of your life” or anything dramatic like that.I’m just suggesting that maybe being the most out of shape person in the gym is a good thing?Because it means you’re making the conscious effort to surround yourself with the people you want to emulate.And that’s powerful.
