I've noticed that indie game development groups are being flooded by composers. As a composer myself, I understand why. The tools are more accessible, game audio is more visible than ever, and there’s a huge pool of genuinely talented musicians entering the space.

At this point, being “good at music” is the baseline, not the thing that makes someone stand out. What actually separates people now is what I’ve started calling “dev brain” thinking like a game developer, not just a musician. Understanding how games are actually made, understanding production realities, implementation, iteration, scope, gameplay pacing, communication, and how to solve problems inside a team.

The composers who consistently get hired usually aren’t just writing strong music. They’re integrating into the development process itself. Music in games isn’t a standalone product. It’s part of a larger interactive system and it has to support design, player experience, technical limitations, and more.

In practice, “dev brain” often matters more than purely musical ability when working in game audio. I think that’s an important shift for newer composers entering the industry to understand.

Just uploaded a new video from the Endix Showcase where I interview Alexander Birke the developer of Sea Of Rifts while we explore the expo and talk about the game, cosmic horror, combat systems, and indie development.

I also worked on the soundtrack for the game, so it was really fun getting to talk about the project directly with the developer while walking through the showcase together 🎶

A student from Kazakhstan sent me a message recently and shared this performance of The King’s Lullaby, a piece I wrote for The Baby in Yellow, after playing it at a concert at the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography in Astana.

What made it especially meaningful was hearing that he’d spent most of his life training as a dancer, and only started learning piano after entering college. I’m genuinely honoured that he chose to learn and perform one of my pieces. Thank you, Sherkhan.

It’s always amazing to see game music reaching people in ways I never expected. ❤️

Got to hang out with Airdorf recently and he surprised me with a signed FAITH: The Unholy Trinity CD!

As someone also working in indie horror games, I really appreciate all the effort that goes into this craft, and I have the utmost respect for solo developers who pull it off. I especially admire the aesthetic and design of FAITH, it truly stands out in the genre!

We just submitted a new game made during Girly Game Jam #3.

Pocket Pet Makeover: Cuteness Faceoff was developed from March 7 to March 13 for the theme “the small things.”

Collect charms, decorate your pocket pet, and compete against playground rivals to see who can create the cutest themed pet.

All music and art were created during the jam.

Recently I spoke at the Austin Game Music Festival at Austin Community College Highland Campus.

My presentation “From Game Jam to Game Career” explored how composers can enter the video game industry through game jams, collaboration, and portfolio development. After the talk, I answered questions from students and participants and later helped organize and lead the composition focused game jam during the festival.

The Austin Game Music Festival celebrates the artistry of video game music through education, live performance, and collaboration between composers, developers, and students.

Organizers: Global Arts United and Density512
Collaborator: Austin Community College

Director: Diogo Carvalho
Managing Director: Dinah Bianchi
