Many people with social anxiety look completely calm on the outside while internally overthinking everything.

You might replay conversations afterwards, worry what people thought about you, or feel exhausted from constantly monitoring yourself around other people.

One of the biggest misconceptions about social anxiety is that it’s simply 'being shy'.

In reality, many people become very good at hiding how anxious they feel.

Over time, social anxiety can start affecting:

• confidence
• relationships
• work situations
• social events
• everyday enjoyment of life

But these patterns can change.

As anxiety reduces, many people find they feel calmer, more comfortable and far less trapped in their own thoughts around other people.

I’ve recently updated an article exploring why social anxiety can feel so exhausting and overwhelming:

Over recent years, one of the things I’ve noticed increasingly in my work in Ely is how many people appear to be coping outwardly while internally feeling mentally exhausted, overwhelmed or unable to properly switch off.

People often describe:

• overthinking everything
• feeling constantly 'on edge'
• struggling to relax
• emotional exhaustion
• racing thoughts
• poor sleep
• feeling mentally drained even when physically rested

Following my recent article in the Ely Standard and other local newspapers, I’ve explored this topic further in a new blog article.

If this sounds familiar, you’re definitely not the only person experiencing it.

One of the most frightening aspects of anxiety for many people is the fear that they may somehow “lose control”.

People often describe fears such as:
• “What if I panic?”
• “What if I embarrass myself?”
• “What if I can’t cope?”
• “What if I’m going crazy?”

These thoughts can feel extremely intense and convincing, especially during periods of high anxiety or panic attacks.

In reality, fears around losing control are a very common part of anxiety and panic patterns - even though many people feel deeply alone with these thoughts when they first experience them.

I’ve written an article exploring why anxiety creates these fears and why things can gradually become calmer and more manageable again.

Mental Health Awareness Week is often a reminder that many people around us may be struggling far more than we realise.

One of the things I’ve noticed repeatedly in my work as an anxiety therapist in Ely is just how many people appear to be coping outwardly while internally feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or stuck in constant worry.

Many people quietly struggle with:
• overthinking
• stress
• panic attacks
• fear of judgement
• difficulty switching off
• low confidence

Often, the biggest relief initially is simply realising they’re not weak, not failing and definitely not the only person experiencing this.

I’ve written a new article for Mental Health Awareness Week exploring this in more detail:

Stress and worry can slowly start affecting every part of life - work, evenings, sleep and even time with family or friends.

I recently shared a real client case study from someone who described feeling unable to properly switch off or relax before hypnotherapy sessions.

Over time, things became calmer, more manageable and they felt more in control again.

If you’re struggling with anxiety, stress or overthinking, it can really help to hear from people who have already been through it.

I’ve recently added several new real client case studies and video experiences covering issues including:

• anxiety and panic attacks
• stress and worry
• confidence and self-doubt
• fears and phobias
• sleep and overthinking

These pages give a clearer idea of what anxiety can actually feel like day-to-day — and how things can begin to change over time.

You can explore them here: danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/hypnotherapy-reviews-el…

If you’d prefer to talk things through first, you’re always welcome to arrange a free initial consultation.

Why Anxiety Comes Back:

It can feel frustrating when anxiety improves… and then seems to come back again.

Many people assume this means they’re back to square one.

In reality, it’s often the same pattern being triggered again, not a reset.

When you understand how that pattern works, it becomes much easier to step out of it.

Why Do Some Thoughts Stick in Your Mind?

Most thoughts pass quickly.

But every so often, one seems to stay - coming back, feeling more important, and harder to ignore.

This usually isn’t about the thought itself.

It’s about the way your mind has responded to it.

The more attention a thought receives, the more likely it is to return.

When that pattern becomes clearer, the experience often begins to change.

Why Some Fears Don’t Make Sense:

Have you ever had a fear that doesn’t seem logical, but still feels very real?

This is something many people experience.

It’s often less about the situation itself, and more about how the mind has learned to respond to it over time.

Once that pattern is in place, the reaction can feel automatic.

Fear of Needles:

For many people, a fear of needles isn’t really about the needle itself.

It’s the reaction the mind and body expect, often built up over time.

That’s why even thinking about a blood test or injection can feel uncomfortable before anything has even happened.

When that response begins to shift, the whole experience can feel different.
