A deep dive into hair bond repair product science. Do these products actually work? The science points to YES. For some of them at least. For lots more detail about hair research and hair bond science, tune into my latest podcast: www.theecowell.com/podcast/hairbonds
Recently there’s been noise about the efficacy of hair bond related products. Points that came up included: a) these products work don’t work, b) they act like any other conditioner, c) the data from big companies is unreliable, and d) the women sci-commers who endorsed these products are paid shills... Disappointingly, these ideas have been reinforced by a few popular cosmetic science accounts...
I reached out to Dr. Ernesta Malinauskyte PhD, Hair Research Director at TRI Princeton, a very reputable independent research institute in beauty, to help me cover this topic... and her response was really interesting to me. Dr. Malinauskyte expressed that, while TRI develops methods to measure bond-building, and test products that claim bond-building capability, they have not conducted fundamental research (e.g. on understanding how bond builders work, concentrations for efficacy, etc) on bond builders in hair. Rather, she deferred me to Dr. Jennifer Marsh PhD, Hair Research Fellow at P&G, expressing that the expertise specific to these products lived in corporate hair research centers.
This was this inspo for my latest podcast. A deep dive into the landscape of hair research, with hair bond repair products as an example. Where is the research happening and why, what are the gaps? For hair bond research, what do we currently understand?
