The Session object was the honest reason so many MSI packagers stayed on VBScript custom actions longer than they wanted to.
PowerShell had no native equivalent, which meant workarounds, interop calls, or giving up property access and MSI logging entirely.
Alex Marin's article walks through exactly what Advanced Installer 23.8 makes available now that $Session is injected automatically into the PowerShell execution environment.
Property reads and writes, structured MSI log output, feature and component state checks, and install mode detection.
The patterns map closely from VBScript, so existing logic doesn't need to be rethought.
AI_GetMSIProperty and AI_SetMSIProperty still work for backward compatibility if you have actions using them.

PowerShell custom actions couldn't access the Windows Installer Session object natively. VBScript could, and that one missing piece kept teams relying on workarounds or holding onto VBScript longer than they wanted to.
Advanced Installer 23.8 solves that.
$Session is now automatically injected into the PowerShell environment when your custom action runs. You get property read/write, direct MSI log output, feature and component state access, and install mode detection, with no setup required on your end.
This release also adds PnPUtil integration for driver deployment, digital signature support for Updates Configuration projects, a security fix in the EXE Bootstrapper, DISM optimization, WinUI Right Align support, IIS state detection, and updated .NET 8, 9, and 10 prerequisites.
