Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials

Are you an aspiring artist? Street art lover? Learning to draw? Or do you have a surf or skateboard that you want to paint? Then welcome to Fieldey TV!

My name is Fieldey, I’m a surf, skate and street artist from Australia. I started this channel 7 years ago when I was an unhappy corporate designer yearning to become an artist. Since posting my very first video I’ve been on a crazy journey from teaching myself to paint surfboards and skateboards, to painting large-scale street art murals.

Turning my passion into a full-time career has been a massive learning curve and I want to pass on the skills and knowledge I’ve learned, as well as inspire others who’re just starting out on their creative journeys.

Hands up if you're scared of putting yourself out there with your art! I personally still hate hearing the word "no" from a prospective client or application submission. Unfortunately, the alternative to not being rejected is to never put yourself out there and if you don't put yourself out there you're never going to grow as an artist or a person... so the only answer is to get comfortable with putting yourself out there and hearing NO. Here are my top 6 tips for getting over this common fear:

1). Try not to tie your entire self-worth up in being an artist. Make sure you’ve got some other stuff going on in your life so it doesn’t feel so “make or break” every time you get rejected.

2). It’s not personal. If you get rejected by a client, publication or organisation it’s not about you as a person or you as an artist. It’s about them and where they’re at.

3). Being rejected multiple times can sometimes tell you that what you’re pursuing is not the right fit for you, or maybe not the right fit for you right now.

4). Acknowledge the fear: “I'm anxious about approaching this client, or I'm scared to cold call this business.” Acknowledging the feelings helps to take away some of the power. You can process the feeling and then go ahead and do that thing that’s scaring you.

5). Realise that however uncomfortable the feelings are, remember that they are just feelings - they can’t hurt you and they will pass.

6). Remember that each time you get rejected you learn something, maybe it’s something you can tweak to improve your chances next time, maybe all you’re doing is learning how to get rejected. Either way, it’s important to get comfy with rejection.

This is a corporate mural done right... Fieldey style :) This was a fun botanical-themed corporate wall mural I painted for Bang Digital. The mural incorporates the Bang corporate motto, plus toys that echo the motto’s main points; the Buzzy Bee toy is a classic Kiwi toy (the owner is from New Zealand and so am I) and is about capturing a spirit of fun and imagination. The retro Superman is about taking ownership, the 80’s Viewmaster toy is about never forgetting the bigger picture, and the tin cans with the string are about communication.
