Pierre Loti

Born to a Protestant family, Loti's education began in his birthplace, Rochefort, Charente-Maritime. At age 17 he entered the naval school in Brest and studied at Le Borda. He gradually rose in his profession, attaining the rank of captain in 1906. In January 1910 he went on the reserve list. He was in the habit of claiming that he never read books, saying to the Académie française on the day of his introduction (7 April 1892), "Loti ne sait pas lire" ("Loti doesn't know how to read"), but testimony from friends proves otherwise, as does his library, much of which is preserved in his house in Rochefort. In 1876 fellow naval officers persuaded him to turn into a novel passages in his diary dealing with some curious experiences in Istanbul. The result was the anonymously published Aziyadé (1879), part romance, part autobiography, like the work of his admirer, Marcel Proust, after him.

Atatürk Arboretum.

In 1949, upon the recommendation of Hayrettin Kayacık, a faculty member of the Faculty of Forestry, to the General Directorate of Forestry, the work to establish an arboretum in an area of 38 hectares near the Büyükdere-Bahçeköy-Kemerburgaz asphalt road began. Camille Guine, one of the Botanical Garden inspectors of Sorbon University, was invited to Istanbul to prepare the project for the Arboretum. The ongoing project work between 1959 and 1961 was left unfinished due to the lack of funds, but the infrastructure and sewing work continued until 1982. In 1982, due to the 100th birthday celebrations of Atatürk, it was named Atatürk Arboretum and gained the status of the Ministry of Forestry Chief of Management.

From Istanbul, The Capital of World: The Obelisk in Sultanahmet
The Obelisk of Theodosius (Turkish: Dikilitaş) is the Ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Thutmose III re-erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople (known today as At Meydanı or Sultanahmet Meydanı, in the modern city of Istanbul, Turkey) by the Roman emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century AD.

The obelisk was erected during the 18th dynasty by Pharaoh Thutmose III (1479–1425 BC) to the south of the seventh pylon of the great temple of Karnak. The Roman emperor Constantius II (337–361 AD) had it and another obelisk transported along the river Nile to Alexandria to commemorate his ventennalia or 20 years on the throne in 357. The other obelisk was erected on the spina of the Circus Maximus in Rome in the autumn of that year, and is now known as the Lateran Obelisk. The obelisk that would become the obelisk of Theodosius remained in Alexandria until 390; when Theodosius I (379–395 AD) had it transported to Constantinople and put up on the spina of the Hippodrome there.
