Down To Earth

Episode 24 of the Sunita Narain Show is now OUT!
https://youtu.be/nZ3bKa7fXSU

Climate change is rewriting our water story. We are seeing more rain in fewer rainy days, with an entire year’s rainfall often falling in just a few hours. To survive this, we must shift our paradigm to prioritise the ability to hold, recharge, and reuse every single drop. It is time to move toward a "water-wise" society that embraces: 'Catch Water where it Falls.'

In the latest episode, Sunita Narain discusses why the future of water security lies in decentralised management. From empowering local communities to manage groundwater to rethinking urban sewage as a resource for recycling. While we have achieved massive scale with national programmes, the next decade is about ensuring these systems are sustainable and effective.

Down To Earth

Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear often termed "ghost gear," accounts for roughly 10% of all marine litter, with 500,000 to 1 million tons entering the ocean annually.

Nets, ropes, floats, and lines—often made of durable synthetic materials—can
persist in the oceans for decades, entangling marine species and damaging
sensitive ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves. In 2021, a total of 58,000 kg of ghost nets were recovered from beaches and the ocean floor. The fishing sector, particularly its formal components, contributes to marine litter through the accumulation of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear.

Watch this space to learn more on marine litter and its components.

Indore is ranked as India’s cleanest cities. But just as the year turned to 2026, there was shock; over 400-500 people were rushed to hospital just because they drank water; it is now reported that at least 10 have died and numbers could go up.

Indore is not alone. In fact, since the news broke about Indore, there has been reports about many other cities where water supply is contaminated; full of excreta and is taking lives.

Sunita Narain explores these tragedies and the way-forward in the latest episode of her show.

The Sunita Narain Show episode will be out tomorrow 17th January at 11am

Sal is the second most prized wood in India after Teak. India has more than 10 lakh square km of Sal forests, and out of that total area, 25% of the Sal forests are located in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Although the tree is home to 339 species of insects, there is one, who on occasion, courtesy of suitable climatic conditions, causes widespread damage.

The Hoplocerambyx Spinicornis, or most commonly known as the Sal Borer, is the most destructive of the lot.

Such is the impact of the infestation that millions of trees have been felled over the span of a century.
First reported in 1905 from Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, the Sal Borer has caused widespread epidemics since.
The latest and deadliest was the turn-of-the-century epidemic from 1995 to 2000. 30 years after the previous outbreak, there are signs of another widespread infestation.

📢Premiering on 10th January, Saturday, join us to discover whether India stands on the cusp of another Sal Borer epidemic.
