The Kumari is one of the most unique and respected traditions of Nepal. A Kumari is believed to be the living form of the Hindu goddess Taleju. Young prepubescent girls are chosen as Kumaris after a careful selection process based on physical perfection, bravery, and religious signs.
The most famous Kumari is the Royal Kumari of Kathmandu, who lives in the historic Kumari Ghar in Kathmandu. People visit her to receive blessings, especially during important festivals and ceremonies.
A Kumari is selected from the Newar community, mainly from the Shakya or Bajracharya clans. After selection, she lives a special life filled with religious duties and public appearances. She is worshipped during festivals such as Indra Jatra, where she rides in a decorated chariot through the city.
The Kumari remains a living goddess until she reaches puberty or loses a small amount of blood from an injury. Then a new Kumari is chosen. After returning to normal life, former Kumaris continue their education and live like other citizens.
