It’s a tough pill to swallow, but experimental bias is incredibly difficult to erase, even when we want to. Bias and ad hoc theories have played a crucial role in scientific history since its inception.
So, I want to hear from the Rational Thinker community: What do you think is the biggest "blind spot" in science today? Is there a theory we are clinging to purely out of comfort or ego? Or, are we truly getting better at following the data wherever it leads?
DID YOU KNOW? The most famous experiment supporting Einstein's general relativity almost failed because of "thermal astigmatism," aka, the lens warped due to extreme heat!
In that experiment, which used data from three telescopes, one telescope suggested Newton was right, while another suggested Einstein was right, and the last telescope couldn't gather conclusive data. It took a 1979 computer re-analysis to prove that the "Newton" telescope was actually just warped by the equatorial heat! 🤯
See how a backup 4-inch telescope saved the day and made Einstein a worldwide celebrity practically overnight: https://youtu.be/p1f2PINeKv0
No video this week guys! I'm working on a larger project that I should have done around this time next week. I felt like this upcoming story, like many I've covered before, has too rich a history to condense into 5 minutes. Anyways, in the meantime, I'll keep making quizzes when I can and I will see you all next week. Hope you all like synthesizing elements! 😉
