Is your Oracle EPBCS application running slower than it should? You might be bringing old on-premise Essbase habits into a modern hybrid cloud world.

In this video, we zoom out to answer one of the most critical design decisions an EPBCS developer faces: When should you rely on Outline Calculations, and when should you write a Custom Calculation Script?

With the shift from traditional Block Storage Option (BSO) systems to Hybrid BSO, the entire approach to optimization has changed. In older on-premise systems, developers frequently used the CALC ALL command to physically calculate and store every single member in the cube. In EPBCS, CALC ALL is not supported, and running full database calculations is a major performance killer.

Instead, Hybrid BSO dynamically calculates parent members during retrieval, meaning your new mantra must be: What is the minimum calculation required to produce the correct result efficiently?

🔍 What You Will Learn:
The Hybrid Shift: Why traditional calculation strategies (like CALC ALL) are obsolete or restricted in modern cloud environments.

Targeted Calculations: How to use FIX statements to isolate specific intersections (e.g., calculating future Forecast months while ignoring historical Actuals).

When to Use Outline Formulas: Best practices for deploying lightweight, dynamic formulas (like Gross Margin, Headcount Ratios, and simple KPIs) that stay consistent across scenarios.

When to Use Custom Scripts: Handling complex business logic, heavy allocations, conditional branching (like executive bonus calculations), and scenario-specific data movements.

Maintainability & Auditing: The structural differences between storing formulas directly inside the outline versus managing business rules separate from the cube.

💡 Example Scenarios Covered:
Workforce Planning: Writing a targeted hybrid BSO script to aggregate Entity and Employee dimensions and calculate accounts only for future forecast periods, avoiding redundant calculations on frozen historical data.

Conditional Business Logic: Writing an IF/ELSE statement within a targeted combination to calculate a 25% executive bonus versus a 12% standard bonus based on HR compensation assumptions.

🛠️ Key Takeaway for Developers:
Efficient EPBCS development is no longer about calculating everything. It's about calculating only what is necessary. Don't defeat your hybrid optimization benefits with large, unnecessary scripts!

Next Up: We will dive deep into the FIX statement—the single most powerful tool in any Essbase script—and learn how to separate basic scripting from truly optimized design.
