Chennai, April 2, 2026: In a significant medical breakthrough, SRM Prime Hospital has successfully performed India’s first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement/Implantation (TAVR/TAVI) through the right axillary artery—an alternative access route beneath the shoulder—on a 73-year-old patient suffering from severe calcific aortic stenosis.
The patient, a retired professional, had presented with decompensated heart failure marked by severe breathlessness. Detailed evaluation revealed advanced narrowing of the aortic valve due to calcium deposits, severely restricting blood flow from the heart. Conventional access routes for the minimally invasive valve replacement procedure, including the commonly used leg artery approach, were deemed unsuitable due to vascular complications such as blockages and unfavorable anatomy.
With no standard options available, the medical team opted for a rare and complex route through the right axillary artery. The procedure was successfully carried out using a catheter-based valve delivery system, marking a first-of-its-kind achievement in the country.
The patient showed remarkable recovery and was discharged on the third day following the procedure. Hospital sources confirmed that the individual has since resumed normal daily activities.
The procedure was led by Dr. Balamurugan S, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology, along with a multidisciplinary team including Dr. A. Thomas George, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine and Diabetology; Dr. P. Balasubramanian, Senior Consultant in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery; and Dr. A. B. Gopalamurugan, Procedure Proctor, supported by cardiac anesthetists and critical care specialists.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Balamurugan said the patient’s condition required urgent intervention but posed significant challenges due to the absence of viable conventional access routes. “We performed an entirely percutaneous right trans-axillary TAVR, which required meticulous planning and advanced expertise due to the complex arterial pathway,” he said. He added that minimally invasive procedures like TAVR offer reduced surgical trauma and faster recovery, particularly beneficial for elderly patients at high surgical risk.
Dr. A. Thomas George highlighted the importance of comprehensive care in such cases, noting that elderly patients undergoing advanced cardiac procedures often have multiple coexisting conditions requiring careful medical management throughout treatment.
Medical experts note that aortic stenosis is a common condition among the elderly, affecting approximately 2–7 percent of individuals over the age of 65. It is primarily caused by age-related degeneration of the heart valve, though conditions such as chronic kidney disease may also contribute.
Doctors advise regular cardiac screenings for individuals above 60 years and urge the public not to ignore early symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or fainting spells, which may indicate serious underlying heart disease. Early detection and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of complications, including heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

Chennai, March 27, 2026: The Colitis & Crohn's Foundation of India (CCFI) today announced the launch of its Tamil Nadu Chapter, marking a significant step towards improving awareness, early diagnosis, and comprehensive care for individuals affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The meeting will be held on 29th March 2026, from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Hotel Residency Towers, T. Nagar, Chennai.
IBD is a chronic condition characterized by persistent inflammation of the intestines, often recurring and significantly impacting a patient’s quality of life. Common symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, reduced physical functioning, anxiety, and in many cases, social isolation.
The disease primarily includes two major conditions: Ulcerative Colitis, which affects the colon and rectum, and Crohn's Disease, which can involve any part of the digestive tract.
Data from the CCFI registry highlights a notable North-South variation in disease patterns, with a higher prevalence of Crohn’s Disease in South India. Additionally, a recent multi-centre survey conducted in Tamil Nadu found that paediatric cases account for nearly 10% of all IBD diagnoses in the state.
“IBD is not just ordinary indigestion or a few days of diarrhoea. It is a serious chronic disease that requires early recognition and proper management. India has the highest number of IBD cases among South and South East Asian countries owing to its large population and the rising disease burden. With cases increasing, particularly in urban areas, the Tamil Nadu Chapter will play a vital role in educating the public and ensuring timely access to specialist care,” said K. R. Palaniswamy, Padma Bhushan awardee and Convenor of the Tamil Nadu Chapter.
The newly launched chapter will focus on raising public awareness about early symptoms such as persistent diarrhoea, blood in stool, recurrent abdominal pain, and fatigue. It will also support ongoing research, provide continuing education for healthcare professionals, and build patient support networks to encourage open dialogue around bowel-related conditions.
In addition, the initiative aims to foster collaboration among doctors, surgeons, nutritionists, nurses, and patient groups to deliver holistic care. With appropriate treatment—including medication, biologics, nutritional therapy, and surgery where required—patients can lead productive lives with improved quality of care.
CCFI has been actively engaged in patient education, scientific exchange, and dissemination of reliable information. The Tamil Nadu Chapter is expected to further strengthen these efforts at the state level, ensuring that patients receive timely support and no one faces the challenges of IBD alone.
Chennai, March 24, 2026: In a landmark advancement for cardiac care in India, Madras Medical Mission (MMM) has successfully performed the country’s first implantation of the Evaheart Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), while also achieving a global first with the implantation of the latest-generation Evaheart 3 model. The breakthrough procedure offers renewed hope for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure with limited treatment options.
The procedure was carried out on a 42-year-old man who presented with severe chest pain and breathlessness and was diagnosed with a massive heart attack that caused extensive damage to the heart muscle. Despite aggressive medical management, including pharmacological support and an intra-aortic balloon pump, his condition deteriorated into advanced heart failure, compounded by kidney dysfunction. Due to the severity of his condition, he was deemed unsuitable for conventional interventions such as bypass surgery or angioplasty.
With no viable alternatives, the medical team opted for advanced mechanical circulatory support through an LVAD.
Explaining the decision, Dr Vijit Cherian, Director – Heart Transplant at MMM, said that the critical nature of the case necessitated the use of the most advanced available device. The team selected the Evaheart system, manufactured by a Texas-based firm, and secured a special import license from the Government of India, as this was the first time the device was being used in the country. Engineers from the United States and Japan assisted during the procedure. Notably, the Evaheart 3 model implanted in this case marks its first-ever use anywhere in the world.
The complex five-hour surgery was performed using a heart-lung machine. Surgeons implanted the device into the left ventricle and connected an outflow graft to the aorta. Once activated, the LVAD immediately restored systemic blood circulation, leading to marked improvement in organ function, including the kidneys.
The Evaheart 3 represents a new generation of centrifugal LVAD technology, offering improved pump efficiency and significantly lower risks of complications such as blood clots, bleeding, and infections. Its advanced design also minimizes blood cell damage, making it a safer and more durable solution for long-term cardiac support.
Highlighting its significance, Dr Ajit Mullasari, Director – Cardiology at MMM, noted that only about 20 hospitals in India currently have the capability to perform such advanced procedures. He added that the Evaheart 3 has the potential to transform outcomes for patients with end-stage heart failure, particularly for those who are not candidates for heart transplantation. The device can serve as a long-term support system, sustaining patients for months or even years.
Post-surgery, the patient showed steady recovery. Temporary rhythm disturbances were effectively managed, and he was gradually weaned off ventilatory support. With stable device performance, he has since been mobilised, with the LVAD fully supporting his cardiac function.
The surgical team included Dr Arumugam C, Senior Consultant – Cardiac & Heart Failure Surgeon, and Dr Shanmugaperumal, Senior Consultant – Anaesthesia, alongside Dr Vijit Cherian.
Also present during the procedure was Dr Tadashi Motomura, inventor and CEO of Evaheart Inc., who provided technical guidance. This milestone reinforces MMM’s position at the forefront of cardiovascular innovation in India, combining clinical excellence with cutting-edge technology to deliver life-saving care.
