How The Gorvernment Budget actually affects your wallet and your stress levels.
In the 2026 South African budget, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the government has pulled back planned tax increases that were on the books last year thanks to better‑than‑expected revenue. That means no big tax hikes for now.
Good news for working families:
👉Income tax relief: tax brackets and rebates will be fully adjusted for inflation. That means your paycheck isn’t shrinking as prices rise. For moms juggling school fees, groceries and petrol, that’s a small but real win.
👉Higher tax‑free savings limits: you can save more tax‑free and contribute more to your retirement with tax benefits. That’s more breathing room for your rainy-day fund or kids’ future.
👉Home budget relief: adjusting medical tax credits and thresholds helps ease the hit of inflation‑driven costs like medical aid and essentials.
What it doesn’t solve: living costs are still high, petrol levies and some duties went up with inflation, but the budget avoids the bigger sting many feared.
Bottom line: this budget isn’t a miracle cure for cost‑of‑living pressures, but for working moms it protects take‑home pay better than in recent years and gives families a bit more control over their money.
