We tend to read the Psalms like they are a safety net.

They aren't.

​Read the actual text of Psalm 46. The ESV doesn't paint a quiet, peaceful picture. It describes the earth giving way. Mountains tearing loose and crashing into the sea. Waters roaring and foaming. Nations raging. Kingdoms falling.

​That is pure, unvarnished chaos. It is violent.

​When I was deployed in Ramadi, and even now facing down the cold up here in Alaska, you learn quickly that the physical world is completely unforgiving. You cannot negotiate with a freezing Alaskan winter, and you cannot reason with human destruction.

​The theology of Psalm 46 doesn't promise that the storm will miss you. It tells you exactly where to anchor yourself when it hits. "The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."
