Hi gang! This is a special aircheck for me. It goes back to 1985 when KTSA, 550 AM San Antonio was still playing music before giving up and moving to full time talk in 1988 coinciding with Rush Limbaugh’s national debut. It’s obvious the station had moved from top 40 excitement it had once been noted for, to Adult Contemporary. Like WBZ Boston, KTSA in this era was personality oriented music by day, and talk shows during the evening hours.

The DJ here is John Elliot. John and I worked together at Country 103.7 KOUL and co owned 96.5 KLTG Corpus Christi around 1996-97. One night sitting around having a few beverages at John’s home in, I think it was, Aransas Pass, we got to talking about the golden age of AM Music radio in South Texas… of course he described working with Ricci Ware at KTSA and I asked if he made any recordings. He presented me with one of his own airchecks… in AM Stereo no less!

This is one of the very few examples of C-Quam AM Stereo in existence and it’s a real good one!

The purpose of this group is to discuss and enjoy the radio industry as we remember it. Topics include but are not limited to: Broadcast radio in general and it's sub-genres- Old Time Radio (the golden era circa 1927-1954), Early Radio (1907-1919), Early Broadcasting and emerging technology (1920-1926), The Rock / Top 40 era (Radio's Second Golden age 1955-1979), FM CHR and format splinters (1980-1996), and Consolidation, Deregulation, Automation and diminishing Returns (1996-present).

We'll also talk about streaming, online stations, technology and listener demos, ownership issues and so on, and

Amateur radio, CB and other relevant forms of "radio" that don't fit elsewhere.

The rules, in case not posted elsewhere on my channel are as follows:

1. Behavior. No bullying. No inflammatory political statements - certain keywords will flag content. You may discuss things reasonably like grownups, or take it elsewhere.

2. No "Hate Speech". Disagreement is fine, but if your thoughts are filled with hatred towards others, it's not welcome here. This is not to keep others feeling from getting hurt, it's to keep this a civil group of friendly people discussing friendly topics.

3. This community is for posting and discussing music, media, radio and associated topics. Occasionally, we may broach environmental issues. Please keep your comments related to those topics, and directly related to the topic of video posts, where they occur.

4. Politics, posting hatred towards the government or officials serving within governments, advocating for violence for any reason, towards any party or member affiliation will result in banning and or blocking. Facebook, X and Truth Social are full of stuff like that. Go there. Not here.

5. I'll allow for one warning for blatant violations. After that, you're banned. This will not turn into another community full of division.

For you who worry about climate change, I’ll post this video from Climate Emergency Forum and ask all of you in my audience to answer the following questions.

Note, I have not added my own observations of rapid warming alleged to be happening in the past several years yet, but in short: our sun has been rapidly increasing solar output, coronal mass ejections and solar flares in the preceding 6 years leading up to the peak of Solar Cycle 25… which is just barely past peak from last fall. That, coupled with substantial weakening of the earths protective magnetic field due to rapid moving of the poles. All of that is contributing to planet warming. With that said, here’s what I commented on the panels comment section below this video.

Your thoughts?

My opinion, there is NO climate emergency. There IS an urgent danger of cataclysmic world war… but that’s a discussion for a different time.

1. Do you demand an immediate halt to all fossil fuel use, and how would you accomplish this?

2. Considering if you were to halt fossil fuel use, how do you imagine people who depend on things like gasoline, home heating oil and medicines derived from fossil fuels would be able to survive?

3. Do you consider that all of modern society might collapse in an abrupt halt to fossil fuels?

4. Do you advocate for degrowth or an end to capitalist based economies?

If you can answer those questions honestly and directly I’ll listen. Won’t necessarily agree but I’ll listen.”

Today’s new video aircheck reveals what 77 WABC New York sounded like with several months to go before switching to talk. The music is sleepy and slow, they took the famous reverb out of the audio chain and thought that a soft Adult Contemporary format would bring in a whole lot of new listeners who grew up with WABC. It didn’t work and by the tim of this recording, a year into the format disaster after ditching Top 40, WABC knew it was going to be TalkRadio 77. Dan Ingram even mentions “They’re building a new studio… for that talk thing…” in his opening.

You may like this aircheck or maybe you’ll hate it, knowing it was the beginning of the end. You could call it, WABC “Lite”. Lol Either way, you’ll want to listen because this description piqued your curiosity!
