This performance of "April in Paris" by the Dutch Metropole Orchestra is from the popular tv-program "Music All-In". Dutch jazz-pianist Pim Jacobs (1934-1996) rose to fame in the 1950’s with his Pim Jacobs Trio. And for more than 10 years he was the host of “Music All-In”. He invited famous musicians like Chris Barber, Stéphane Grapelly, Esther Ofarim and The Dutch Swing College Band to play with him and members of the Metropole Orchestra. In this video the orchestra is conducted by Rogier van Otterloo, who in 1980 became their chief-conductor, and vibraphonist Chris Schulze plays a lovely solo. The original song '(Get your kicks on) Route 66' here performed by Manhattan Transfer is 80 years old on March 15 or 16 (both dates are mentioned as recording date). America’s Route 66 became an iconic highway in 1946, when Bobby Troup wrote a song about his travels along this road. The Nat King Cole Trio was the first to release the song, on April 22, 1946. It became a huge hit, and nowadays it’s not only a jazz-standard but it is covered more than 500 times by jazz-, blues-, pop- and rock groups. Close harmony group Manhattan Transfer won a Grammy Award for their version in 1983.
