Rise-and-Shine

One teaching of Jesus has been changing how I think about leadership.

He said:

"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant."
(Matthew 20:25–28; Mark 9:35; Mark 10:42–45; Luke 22:25–27)

The world often associates greatness with power, status, or authority. Jesus turned that upside down: true greatness is measured by how much good you do for others.

When you think about it, many of the people who make the biggest positive impact are servants in the truest sense:

Doctors serve patients.

Teachers serve students.

Writers and thinkers serve by sharing knowledge.

Police officers and firefighters serve their communities.

Judges serve justice.

Parents serve their families.

Good leaders serve the people they lead.

Authority isn't meant to elevate the leader—it exists to better serve others.

The more influence we have, the greater our responsibility to use it for the good of others.

Maybe greatness isn't about having people serve us. Maybe it's about becoming someone who serves well.
