New video! https://youtu.be/2r2tIbJ69Qg Starting with EarthBound’s finale, Pokey/Porky exclusively uses a spider mech to walk around in. But did you know that Darth Maul replaces his lower half with similarly mechanical spider legs after he gets cut in half by Obi-Wan? I used that as inspiration for this video’s thumbnail, and I added another (very niche) Star Wars x MOTHER series connection with the EarthBound-y Darth Vader/Pigmask sprite that was actually created by co-developers Brownie Brown when they first teased MOTHER 3.

Of course, Porky & Anakin became fast friends on my Tomodachi Life island, and the most trouble-making boy ever also unsurprisingly caught the eye of The Emperor.

What do you think Porky’s Sith name would be? “Darth Porky” is fine, but I vote for “Darth Swine” or “Darth Butcher” instead...

My gamer grandfather™ recently asked me what “The Seven Basic Plots” would be for videogames (inspired by the book “The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories”), so I came up with a list! The author’s seven basic plots are as follows:

1. Overcoming the Monster
2. The Quest
3. Voyage and Return
4. Rags to Riches
5. Comedy
6. Tragedy
7. Rebirth

So I thought the videogame equivalent might be:

1. Rescue the person/collect all of the "MacGuffins"
(Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot)
2. The chosen one(s); a prophecy to fulfill
(Deltarune, EarthBound, The Legend of Zelda)
3. Fall -> Rise
(Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Katamari Damacy)
4. Become the very best/most powerful
(Pokémon, Pac-Man/arcade “high score chasers”, Mortal Kombat)
5. Use these tools to make your own fun
(Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Super Mario Maker)
6. Full immersion in a simulation/world
(The Sims, PowerWash Simulator, "visual novel" games)
7. The "anti-videogame"/subversion
(Undertale, Moon, Takeshi's challenge)

I may make a video out of this, so tell me if you have any objections/can think of examples that don’t work within this template. I’d also like to know where your favorite game may fit! Please note that this is just a fun thought exercise... I did not take 34 years to ruminate on this topic like the author did, lol.

The panelists of the Insert Credit podcst were similarly asked what the “Seven Basic Game Genres” were, and they answered “Racing, Shooting, Fighting, Jumping, Reading, Menus/Selecting, and Gambling”, which I also like.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Steelbook came in! This is slowly becoming a Rosalina & Luma shrine 🌟

It's been almost three month since the film released in theaters... how do we feel now that some time has passed? I still stand by my review (https://youtu.be/hm16GQ1tR4c?is=6d7dA..., where I admit to enjoying it more than the first, while also making its flaws abundantly clear 😅

Ultimately, I think it has higher highs, and I like the breadth of much more obscure Mario references. I do still wish it had a more coherent plot structure, and I hope the third movie is more focused, but I'm also content with my dazzling 98-minute Mario Easter egg buffet. I think it's OK to appreciate what we got for what it is, while simultaneously expecting more from the writers.

Ms. Pac-Man analog horror attract screen

I played two versions of my favorite classic arcade game, Ms. Pac-Man yesterday! One was a working machine at Cobra Arcade Bar... and the other a glitchy, busted-but-beautiful cabinet at the Gamers Warehouse in Tucson.

I suspect that Ms. Pac-Man was jealous of her replacement, Pac-Mom, and her hatred transformed her into an inexplicable nightmare not dissimilar to EarthBound's Giygas.

Fun fact about Nintendo's new WarioWare-like mobile app, Pictonico: if you don't have enough photos selected that the app can distinguish as a "face", the game will instead use one of five preset stock photos (pictured below) for microgames that require a face. You can therefore consider these five to be the "canon" Pictonico characters! Who wants Moai statue as the next Smash Bros. fighter?

Pretty funny default choices imo, but it's odd that two of them are winter holiday themed (the snowman & gingerbread person).

In this major step of my mental health journey, I talk about how developing insomnia forced me into researching my neurodivergent conditions more, allowing me to discover the overlap between OCD, ADHD, and autism in my late 20s. I discuss the lengths I took to overcome my strong internal skeptism, along with the laborious, difficult, and (potentially) expensive process of getting a clinical evaluation as an adult.

This is something that's primarily meant to be listened to, but I do speak over a playthrough of "LSD: Dream Emulator" (fitting for the topic of sleep & the subconscious...)

This channel's design is inspired by the N64-era specifically, so for this episode's thumbnail I referenced Donkey Kong 64 by editing in the one bloodshot eye from King K. Rool's model!
