I've noticed that people speaking in a second language quite often say 'ummmmm' or 'errrrrrr' in between words (which is understandable).
HOWEVER - the next time you are trying to remember that forgotten word... instead of saying 'ummmmmmmmmm' - just pause.
Stop talking for 5 seconds whilst you think of what it is you want to say.
β This achieves 2 things:
1) It makes you sound more fluent and confident - happy daysπ
2) It prevents you from getting flustered, and therefore making a mistake, then getting more flustered, then saying 'ummmmmm' more, and so on, and so on, and so on (creating a vicious circle)... π
Try it the next time you're speaking in English - instead of 'ummmmmmm' - just pause.
π Vocab used:
- Happy days (idiom) = A British expression used to show happiness or satisfaction π
- Flustered (adj) = Nervous, confused, or unable to think clearly, often due to stress π΅
- Vicious cycle (noun) = A situation where one problem causes another, making the original problem worse π

π‘ Pause more, 'um' less:
When speaking, use the power of the pause.
